I don't know, I've always found these guys to be the least grunge-oriented band of the Big 4. They resemble more of a sludge/alt/doom concoction to me

What IS grunge? None of the big 4 really sound like any of the others.

For my purposes Alice In Chains is simply a heavy metal band with doom and acoustic influences

All of the Big 4 shared more or less the same influences. PJ was probably the least metallic sounding though, and AiC is arguably the most.

I'm not sure that AiC share ANY influences with Nirvana or Pearl Jam. AiC started of as a glam-metal band and then later got all Sabbath-y. Nirvana was always a punk band. PJ (initially anyway) took their cues from classic rock and Neil Young. Not really a strong connection.

Well I know PJ were heavily into Cream and The Doors.

Both SG and AiC listened to Black Sabbath. As for

Nirvana, I know Sonic Youth and REM heavily influenced

them.

Think of it like you would the Big 4 of Thrash. Metallica's the mainstream all-encompassing one.

Anthrax is the humorous, groovy one. Megadeth's the more technical one. Slayer's the fast, raw one.

Grunge works the same way. Nirvana's the more punk-inspired act. Soundgarden's the more classic rock-

inspired act. Alice in Chains is the more metallic, doomy act. Pearl Jam's the cleaner, more 80s

alternative rock-inspired act. All the bands have elements of grunge that tie them together, but are

separated by their own personal influences.
