The problem with this album is he doesn't have much wisdom to give the listener or anything to say beyond reminiscing on what New York was like for 40 minutes, hes good with imagery, but if it weren't for AZ's verse this album would be relatively shallow and simple.
and eventually when Nas started being political he just sounded stupid
it annoys me people (noobs) constantly refer to this as the best, cuz then people who don't know hip hop and are looking for more than stories of living in NY, and they check this first and think 'oh hip hop is what I thought it is', when theres a lot wittier and more meaningful hip hop than this basic stuff.

its shallowness would just be more obvious. AZs verse is so dope it gives soul to the whole album and makes Nas' mediocre 'yo im from the streets, yo check my beats' lines seem better than they are.
One Love is the only song i'd make an exception to that statement for... even NAs' verse on Life's a Bitch is basic and kinda boring.
