Thats an insane amount of money. Hard to believe.

That aside, Kanye redeemed himself after his previous effort 808's & heartbreak, which totally sucked in my opinion.

Thats why its so hard to hate on Kanye, His records always have hunger and a sense of urgency, something hip hop is seriously lacking these days.

Hell even Jay z sounded fresh, when was the last time that happened?

Wrong. It just wasn't a rap album.

atavisticguilt: TOTALLY. i really dug it at first, too.

agreed with nearly everything said here, mainstream hip-hop hasn't been this good since tupac's death.
my only complain is that kanye likes to rap about himself too much, so unless you're a tabloid whore who likes when celebrities air out their dirty laundry, or just a huge fan of kanye's, sitting through all 9 minutes of the blame game isn't going to be that interesting to you. that being said, his rhymes are fucking gold on this one. love it.

well I guess that depends on what you consider mainstream. But if Common, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon or Lupe Fiasco count (there's probably more, that's just off the top of my head) then I'd say that's a bit of an exaggeration.

At the end of the day, a 'Classic' rating is the only one that makes sense, because that's what this album is going to wind up being. Not just in the sense of how good it is, or how popular it's going to be, or how controversial, but mostly in how influential it's going to prove throughout the next evolutions of hip-hop.

I'm not the biggest Lupe fan at all, I was just saying that there has been good mainstream hip hop since Tupac died

Well that's just silly Inveigh. The Roots, Lupe, Kanye, Talib Kweli, Cudi, Outkast, Mos Def, I could name tons of great mainstream rap artists in the last decade.

it's an exaggeration, for sure. i give lupe, raekwon, JL, cudi, k-os etc props any day, but ask an average person to name some mainstream rappers and those aren't the answers you're going to get.
even if they WERE mainstream, the sheet number of quality MCs is insignificant in comparison to the number that have released a mediocre hit and then faded into obscurity.
