A bunch of us were talking last night on turntable about how subtle, insular, and delicate 2011's highlights have been thus far, as opposed to last year's mammoth releases from Kanye, Titus, Sufjan. So it makes sense that things aren't going to feel like 5's. That doesn't mean they aren't just as special.

oh shit, Grace For Drowning too. how the hell did i forget that one? that one not only has a strong chance to be a 5, but the best thing Steven Wilson has ever set his name to.
yeah, i know, with expectations like that, it wouldn't be surprising if i consider it a flop, but still.

Btw, i've only heard this and Illinois so far. Really unsure of where to go from here; i'm aware that nothing else that i check out from him will likely touch either of these records, but what should i check out from him next?

I keep jumping from a 4 to a 5 in my mind when I listen to this. It's just so creatively overwhelming.

Impossible Soul is impossibly perfect.
I was chatting with Ali last night and we agreed that if Sufjan never released any more material, this would be the perfect coda to his career. Either way, let's all agree that Mr. Stevens is batshit insane now.

I sincerely wish I liked this album. So badly. Seeing everyone gush about it for over a year just makes me feel like a bit of a tool for not liking it, but damnit, I've given it like 12 different chances and every single time it does nothing for me but bore me mercilessly. Not even enjoyable boredom either like with some post-rock, just "wow I want to change the song" boredom. I guess Sufjan just ain't for me it seems.
