The documentary I’m trying to break your heart is available on Youtube for all to see.
I can’t help but feeling that when they really rock out they sound a lot like big star’s Radio City era. It’s kinda your run of the mill follow the band around out (mostly Jeff tweedy) and see what happens, but then things do kind of happen. There’s a sense of make it or break it to it. Internally and externally. Tension rises between the band members. Their record label drops them just after they’re done recording Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and subsequently Jay Bennet is told that he’s out of the band. With the black and white filming they’re going for a timeless feel I guess. I don’t mind it at all but the ending seems kinda tacked on. A decimated band that turns into these black shadows by the waters edge. I can’t say that I’m a hell of a lot wiser about who Jeff Tweedy is and who the rest of them are like as persons but it’s a very nice behind the scene documentary nevertheless.

I read Tweedy's first memoir, Let's Go (So We Can Get Back). It's worth a read as it gives more insight into the band's discography and the recording process. Of course, he talks about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot but it was also surprising to learn that 'Can't Stand It' was written for Summerteeth as per request from the record label. 'She's a Jar' was originally intended to be the opening track.

I haven't read that one. He lived a short and interesting life. I'd like to read it. What's it called?

There are multiple autobiographies. I’ve already read one called Pink Moon by a danish writer. It’s from 1986. He went to see his parents in this tiny village before they died and talked about his childhood, formative years, musical influences and such. It’s a very interesting read. I think it’s the earliest autobiography on Nick. But the one I’m going to read is Nick Drake: The autobiography by Patrick Humphries.

Let me know what you think when you've had a chance to read it. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Wilco have announced a new album for May 27th called Cruel Country. It's a double album of mostly country songs, recorded live in The Loft studio.

It sounds like it will be a more straightforward album. Nice to hear Jeff modulating his voice again. No more mumblecore stuff.

Should be interesting since while country has always been an aspect of their sound they haven’t really done a full-on country album since Being There (also, interestingly, their last double album).

Looking forward to this! I've been a bigger fan of their recent output than most, but a change will probably do them good.

I hope this is more Being There than A.M. anyway.
21 songs of straight country could be a tough listen but subversion and lending on the alternative sides between the more straight songs? Happy days.
