New album is better than this imo

It's not. It's a good album but this is them at their peak.

Heafy's harsh vocals on here have always sounded forced to me. Almost as if his technique is off.
|
| |
He was using a bad technique for years and almost totally ruined his voice because of it.
The vocals on the new album are a lot better but the lyrics here are great.

Ascendancy is still better than this, but between the two and the new album there's not a great deal in it. Kirisute Gomen is amazing though, it's their best opener they've done.

I remember reading about why they have Greek and Japanese themes on this album. I remember thinking the reasoning makes no sense at all.
|
| |
Gotta include both, otherwise you just look like a racist

I mean the Japanese themes make sense given Heafy and the title, but the Greek themes are definitely reaching further.

Yes doing one or the other seems like a doable theme but how does one associate with the other? Very little other than each civilization having classic literature much referenced in modern times

Well I mean their timelines did overlap so maybe they were trying to juxtapose Western and Eastern mythology/history. Not saying it's the most sensible approach, just trying to figure out what they could have been thinking.

Easily their best album

No doubt. Album has aged suspiciously well.
