I wish I could like this album half as much as most of you seem to, I really do, but this struggles to get a three with me. I have no idea why, it's just a chore to get through, and I've tried. I listened to it fully a few nights in a row, just falling asleep to it, no change, I just discovered that the last track was awesome. That's it, even Bleak has grown off me now.

I know what you mean, I suffer the same for a few songs on Ghost Reveries, but not this one so much. It just takes patience I guess, I take it one part of each song at a time.

Thank you, Spongebob is great. I'm just a bit flustered with all the light towards this album in particular, I'm planning on acquring Still Life soon enough to see if it leaves a greater impact. Not black or death but Kamelot, Katatonia, Textures who's like Meshuggah but better. Meh, going too off topic but these are bands people should check out.

So after a few listens, there is no doubt in my mind that Opeth are masters of their respective instruments. I can't say I was really ready for the contstant clean/overdrive, tempo, or growling/singing changes. This seems like an album I'd have to listen to a lot more to really appreciate. Also, coming from a background of listening to people like Jack Johnson singing, I can't say I could really get into the majority of the growling vocals. The clean, slower songs were breathtaking, but some of the progressions were just too much for me to handle. I was just wondering when the next break would come. Obviously, that's a part of metal that I will just have to grow into, and I'm definitely going to continue to listen to this album and I have no doubt at all that it will grow on me and I'll be rating it a classic sooner or later.

When I first started getting into metal other than Iron Maiden, it took me a while to be able to stand the growling vocal, and after that another while to appreciate them. I was like you, waiting for the growling to end and the clean breathtaking sections to start, but once you get to enjoy an appreciate everything things get lot better.

And I'm talking about BTBAM, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity; not just this album which was also one of the one that took me a while to get used too

It was easier for me to appreciate Akerfeldt's harsh vocals once I heard other metal bands with harsh vocals; his are just untoppable in the genre imo.

Also, the people that don't like Opeth or find them overrated (which they are, here at least) generally are like that because Opeth pretty much always does the same thing: brutal/soothing dynamic. But I haven't found another band that does it as good.

I actually think the problem with Opeth is that they are good at what they do but don't really try to venture much further...Michael's cleans and growls always sound like his other cleans and growls and i don't feel like they are inspired on this album...I think his growls are the best around but i find his cleans to be pretty lacking...

I find this album to be a chore to get through just because it feels like they are going through the motions...I like pretty much all of their "clones" or bands that do they brutal/soothing thing the same as they do, i just feel like they are inspired to do it while opeth just does it because they are opeth.

I see where you're coming from man. I really think you should try some other heavy music, I recommend Ride The Lightning by Metallica or anything by Iron Maiden. That's the stuff that got me into the heavier styles.
