Only 3rd time I’ve spun this album and no question this is amazing, and I’ve found a you tube version of both discs together which was an experience to remember on my headphones! If only there was a flac version. But of all post metal bands, I do find the vocals the least interesting element here. Something about them sounds one dimensional and flat - can’t put my finger on it. Sure he can scream but it just sounds so empty compared to other pm vocalists. Not enough to dent what is a great album - but I think this would be a 5 for me if it was instrumental.

Having spent today with the next 3 albums, vocals are finally settling in better. Definitely my favourite of the first four.

Having spun their discography over the week, no issue with the vocals at all now. Just needed some time to settle with them. Although I still think in terms of other pm vocalists they do lack something.

Armine's ludicrous vocals were one of the main selling points on '05. To me, nobody ever sounded like him before. And never since.

And he still sounds that good live, per 2018 me as a reference.

Just listened to this again. To be fair I think I’m being a bit harsh. His vocals are pretty intense. Maybe it’s that I sometimes wish for some variation in tone as those screams hit pretty hard. Just some more variety in expression other than full throttle.

Right, you really only get a change in Absent and Au Pays Natal, but then imo it hits about a hundred times harder for that reason.

Ayil had that dynamic, too, during that breakdown before the heavy climax.

that's what most prominent post-metal vocalists do, and honestly i think it's great
