Yeah probably, might even be better than Blood Inside. Parts of it remind me of Perdition City.

Svidd Neger is hands down my favorite non LP Ulver.

I like how Ulver threads have popped up recently. Great band. Will check Svidd Neger immediately if it sounds like Perdition City.

It has a more classical approach. Another masterpiece, of course, but I think it's not for Ulver beginners.

I see. Which of their metal albums are on the metal spectrum ?

the first three are old school black metal. Then you have War of the Roses and Blood Inside that are not metal, but are more organic in sound.

I'm probably gonna start with their metal albums first.

"the first three are old school black metal"

that's not true though. their second album is a full-on folk album without any metal elements at all. Bergtatt is far from being "old school black metal", too.

indeed about the second one, but I always thought of folk as part of black metal and I honestly don't remember Bergtatt very well, if at all.

Give it another listen man, this is exactly the right season to do it. the very first track alone will make clear that there's so much more to it than old school bm ;)

Rik knows

Their first three are all similar in sound, but in terms of genre there's no bm at all in the second one. It still sounds similar to Bergtatt and Nattens though, that might be what Myth was trying to say.

Yeah, they all share a similar atmosphere but make use of totally different styles in order to express it. It's like taking a look at the same thing from three very different perspectives.

True. I've always found Bergtatt to be almost like a fusing of Kveld and Nattens

That's definitely a way to see it, even though it also has a lot of things that neither of its successors had.

Am I crazy for hearing a bit of blackgaze in Chapter I?

Yeah early Ulver could be seen as proto-blackgaze.

Don't know if it's still there, but the wikipedia article for the album has blackgaze listed as one of its genres. Don't know if I'd go that far, it's probably just melodic black/folk metal.
