sowing season is probably the most oversputhyped song of all time (until someone mentions a worse one)

I’m such an album dork that recommending someone individual songs to get into a band just seems really weird to me.

Nah I definitely think there are Deja songs that are way more overhyped by their reddit fanbase which never seems to grow up and realize how much better every LP afterwards is

Still people there in their 40s getting "you're the smell before rain" tattoos and shit like that

ngl I miss my era of working out if an album was worth hearing (i.e. buying on cd) based solely on rep and my impression of one or two songs from yt
albums are obvs Sacred Formes, but they're so inefficient for discovery at points. feels structuring your entire diet around whole 12-inch pizzas or some shit
managed to bypass Deja hype in its near-entirety and mainly checked it at a responsible age as a curio in the end; no regrets on that front, esp since a handful of songs do hold up

Alas I am too young to have had the CD (or even digital) purchasing experience but this does make sense and sometimes I do long for that kind of approach. I do of course often sample songs before going all the way (though I usually don’t listen to a whole song and instead just dip into bits and pieces of a few to see if I generally like what it’s doing) but I’m so beholden to the albums format as the way is consume and connect with music that pretty much always gonna go for that, especially since the “price of admission” these days is essentially nil. That said I know that my approach is kind of limiting and I am actively trying to become a bit less strictly tied to the “full album or bust” mindset.

For whatever reason that’s what happens when you use BBCode to format a quote on this old ass site.

mmmhm likewise, but it's kinda coded into the walls of sites like this ain't it :/ I get a lot of mileage out of my own playlists and shuffles but find it a way bigger barrier than it should be to tune into other folks' as a source of discovery
unless it's in-person or synchronised/a listening party. hmpf

Agreed Johnny and part of my shift is trying to use playlists/artist shuffles a bit more as a way to get into individual songs rather than relying on the album as my only vessel. Ultimately the song is the fundamental unit of most popular music forms (i.e. like 97% of what I listen to) and while I firmly believe the album is a necessary format for the way it provides context and heft to individual songs that can't necessarily be achieved individually, I'm also aware that many albums are going to have a handful of songs I really like and a bunch I don't really and that I could enhance my experience as a listener by allowing myself to sometimes view the album as merely a collection of songs from which to select the ones worth keeping. Give every album the chance to be something more but don't be so dismissive if it doesn't end up being such.

Gotta say I don't feel the same @neek, I am generally not in favor of the socialization of every platform. I much prefer streaming services as a more neutral platform, I can go to Sput/RYM etc. for the community and discussion aspect.

that's definitely fair boney

it's funny bc I find the majority of the way I listen to music is through playlists/repeating songs/the like, but listening to albums is the way that I catalogue music and find all those wonderful songs that I can't stop listening to. I'm trying to listen to full albums more, I never even fully revisit most of my 4.5s more than once every couple years

@theBoneyKing i didn't know that but now i do and it's a very good song. I love that guy's vocals, this is a really good band, i know i made a joke previously about their band name but this is hitting the spot rn. Especially Not The Sun. It's soooooooo good.
