If ur analyzing it as a whole it’s pretty damn important to include what the artist says on their own tracks
That’s not to say a message of nothing isn’t reasonable too (lil pump, carti, Travis Scott) just when there is like a discernible lyrical message of the track, it’s pretty important to include that in an analysis, since that could be exactly what people are enjoying in the art

'analyze it as a whole' is ambiguous though. you could analyze something holistically and still put disproportionate weight on an aspect of the music to which you're more receptive.

well yea, but choosing to ignore completely one aspect is assuredly putting disproportionate weight on that aspect vs the rest

hmm perhaps. but maybe it's not a deliberate choice. maybe some people just prefer processing vocals as just sounds without the dialogic component. i don't usually pay attention to lyrics in music tbh. they just don't interest me. it's not why i listen to music.

i just wanna comment that i also don't naturally focus on the lyrics when listening to music. i'm not a native english speaker, so it doesn't come naturally when listening like two thirds of everything i listen to. however, whenever i see a piece that seems like a serious effort was made, or that could have funny lyrics, i make sure to read the them if i can; e.g. bjork, jenny hval, trespassers william, personal stuff, nicki minaj, rap in general, joke stuff, etc
this qualifies

never understood that opinion. GKMC is fantastic, yea, but not nearly as much substance as this. the lyrics, connectedness, and jazz win me over. though I realize a lot of people dont care about those things

I care ab those things buttboy, I care
Gkmc is real af tho, except real

Is Real the one that's like "I'm so high, I can touch the sky"? Because if so then yeah I actually like that one
|
| |
No it’s the one that goes “I’m real I’m real I’m really really real”
That one is Now or Never buttboy and yes that one is fucking great
