The lyrics on this album are way worse than previous albums... and Chino isn't even really known for standout lyrics.
Rocket Skates and CMD/CNTRL are nothing interesting except cool riffs
Butcher is repetitive as fuck.
The ambiance and swells of atmosphere like in songs like Beware, Cherry Waves or Digital Bath are watered down or stripped away on this album (I have the same problem with Gore).
Half of this album is slick, condensed Deftones, but not in a good way. It just feels cheap a lot of the time. I will admit it's catchy and accessible, making it fine for a casual listen, but there's nothing new to be found on this album at all. The production is fantastic and some of the songs are fun (especially live), but mostly because there are cool riffs here.
This album bothers me because there are a lot of technical things done really well here (vocals, riffs, production), but the songwriting feels lazy.
Also: Risk is cool.

This rant brought to you by the conversation TheSpirit and I were having about it when I went to visit him. I was never able to articulate why I had a problem with this album as opposed to other 'tones albums.

For the record, this is way better than anything on Diamond Eyes.

I think this is a good starting point if you're getting into Deftones, but yeah I can see merit in your point about it catchy/accessible, but not being outstanding.

KNY has almost all of the same Pros/Cons, except that it has Rosemary, Tempest, Leathers, and Entombed which are all better than songs from here.
Too bad the rest of it is boring as shit
