Never mind. Peeked at your ratings and you don’t enjoy any rap or hip hop at all so idk why we’re talking about this.

Let me think... I've enjoyed (and still enjoy) full albums by Aesop Rock, El-P, Cannibal Ox, cLOUDDEAD, Death Grips, Clipping., Suiyoubi no Campanella (I guess), Blockhead (that one is instrumental though), DJ Shadow (Endtroducing.... is also instrumental and I should update the rating), Kanye West, Madvillain... I think that's about it. I don't enjoy everything by these artists but I have enjoyed at least one of their albums.
Oh, ok. Guess I'll just stop enjoying these guys I actually enjoy because I don't like hip hop or something.

"If you gave this anything less than a 3.5, please come forward and explain yourself."
sure!
"But I’m constantly blown away by the lyrics."
i find them really blunt, cringy, cheesy, preachy, smug, and they don't really pique my interest to begin with for some reason, despite being really relevant. I'm familiar with the background and sociopolitical context, but i don't need more of it coming from kendrick
"I’m blown away by the copious amounts of instruments present from front to back."
not necessarily a good thing. sometimes it works (e.g.: "for free?") but for the most part, it's just ok. Ambitious, but only ok.
"I’m blown away by how Kendrick sounds like 5 different people on this album (dude could be a voice actor if he isn’t already)."

"I’m blown away by just how big and epic this album sounds."
i'm actually quite happy to see someone having ambition still, but it's just not working for me
"it’s musically complex, and lyrically compelling"
it's white noise in the background and a mess of a story
|
| |
"If this music is too simple....what rappers are you able to enjoy?"
so if other people are mediocre, that means this is somehow better?

not tryna start shit, just honestly sharing my feelings

Is this complex enough for you?
I want to understand why you feel the way you do.

imo rap and epic/grandiose music just don't mix. Rap is supposed to be about the subjective experience, the man in the street, the average joe telling his side of the story. It's supposed to be fragmented, narratively unreliable, subjective. It's what makes it fresh, original and compelling.
When you mix this sort of narrative structure with grandiose, lush instrumentation and try to force it to tell a bigger, more epic 'story' it comes off as cheesy, as preachy and up-tight.
but that's just like, my opinion.

breaking new ground is bad?

lmao at this breaking new ground
but no, it's not that it's bad, just i don't like it.

@Drifter
After around 2:45 that the instrumental just stops being interesting in any way (and on top of that they start talking about God knows what). The rappers aren't doing anything that I find interesting, the first one goes on for too long, 2Pac is alright, and the other one was never interesting.

They're talking about killing people and people getting killed and selling drugs it's not hard to figure out just read the lyrics

So even if the beat switches up it's still not good enough. Hmmmmm

Also I'm not sure but you might be thinking that E-40 (the first guy) and Spice 1 (the second guy) are the same. Their verses are a fine length there's just no break between them
|
| |
I don't really care about the lyrics. Yeah, sometimes that's not good enough, consider that complexity isn't all for me, sometimes I just don't like the rhythm or the melody, not everything I like is something I'd describe as complex.
Maybe I did, I was kinda losing interesting soon and I was trying to focus more on the instrumental as well.

"but as with most hip hop every track is too long (honestly, hip hop on average should have tracks that are like 2 minutes long)"
Lmfaooo. I've seen a lot of bad hip hop takes on here but this one...whewww

I really really hate this idea that rap/hip hop HAS TO BE short songs that sound small or intimate. What a dead end fuckin genre any genre would be if it had to follow meaningless rules like that. So much of this album is subjective and personal, just because there’s variety in subject matter and instrumentation doesn’t mean it no longer qualifies as good rap. That’s bullshit.
