I genuinely like this what a surprise. I think they went just wacky/theatrical enough to not bore me to tears this time.

Damnation is still the best non-metal Opeth album.

I love putting on Damnation whenever I feel like slashing my wrists

Not feeling this one, slapped on the 2.5 and into the trash it goes

Kontinuerlig Drift / Continuum is the current fav. Album kinda reminds me of a metal version of Harmonium

Damnation is by far the best non-metal opeth. It is a bit depressing at times (there is literally a song called hope leaves), but I find it is more just building an atmosphere of melancholy rather than actual sadness. Like I don’t feel myself emotionally involved in the same way that I would with say a “depressing” record by sufjan/bright eyes. I find some of those albums unlistenable because they are too emotionally taxing. Damnation just has a super enjoyable melancholy mood.

Love this one, don't ever feel the need to listen to Damnation anymore. It has a few great tracks and some annoying ones. It could have to do with me disliking Steven Wilson's voice.

Really love how the older Opeth melodies and sounds get mixed with the newer Opeth prog and eclectic approach. They pulled it off here finally!

Don't agree with either of those because my love for Heritage knows no bounds.

Continental Drift (new nickname) had some growing pains for me, but I got there in the end.
You guys are making me want to revisit PC/Sorceress just to check I'm not mistaken, maybe this will breathe new life into those records... or perhaps the comparison will simply serve to make them look even worse, who knows?

@DDD Haha I guess I know what you mean! It's cheesy, weird and orchestral, but it's also beautiful, twisted, and heartfelt. This album feels very honest to me.

I fear the latter for me Demon, perhaps PC can escape that but I feel if I jam Sorceress (which I am not... looking... forward... to ever) it will fall flat on its face even more because this rules so hard.
But maybe it will make us appreciate this all the more, who knows? Closer is gorgeous too. Love that cool echo-effect on the drums in the first and last part of the song.

I'm just finishing PC now in my reverse discog run of the week lol and man...they're both interesting albums - Sorceress looses himself, and looses all steam...I can't avoid how awesome the first part goes, definitely unbalanced . PC is more consistent but ultimately boring, aka no riffs...this shadows both of them imo.
