love how uneasy this is making some people, hopefully not in a condescending way...but it makes me almost more intrigued to listen...here we go

every album after HV has had a minor backlash, it's been an interesting late-stage era

Hans, it works better in the context of being the closer here, a stripped back beauty after an onslaught of embellishment and clutter...but as an advance release track it really didn't hit me as a classic National song should.

It is definitely top 5 for me, maybe top 4 - I do see the appeal but a couple of other songs here are more interesting. Where is Her Head, Rylan, Quiet Light, maybe Kansas.

I do think these last few albums have separated those who “merely” love the band’s classic albums from those for whom they’re truly essential. Especially with SWB, it seemed like a lot of people didn’t really give it a chance.

After my first round of listens, the only tracks I ever even care to hear again are Light Years, Quiet Light, Rylan, and Where is Her Head. Maybe one or two of them will randomly grow, like Hairpin Turns. The rest is actually quite shite, to quote Zak.

This album seems really short with all the track skipping I'm doing. Quiet light, Where is her head, and Rylan are great. Also, cheers to the dude who put Humiliation in his top 10... that song is a stripped-back national song in peak form.

Well Quiet Light and Rylan seems everyone can agree are 'traditional National songs' and quite good - slightly better than the majority of their B-Side material at least.

Neither would make a top 8 songs on Alligator, Boxer, HV or Trouble - but they're fine and everyone can appreciate them. That's as close to a consensus as I can ascertain so far lol

Neither would even make the top 5 songs on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, although Light Years would. I also like that album more than most.

We've been having a little re-appreciation society for that album here the last few days actually.

Boney is threatening to 5 it

Light Years sounds a lot like an Anathema ballad, especially Electricity as Doof pointed out a couple pages ago. Kinda distracting but otherwise it's a great song.

I don't see this going below a 4 for me. Overall it's great, just some failed experiments here and there. Might be their weakest since the debut tho

Idk...it’s simple and unassuming, its songwriting strives to nothing farther than it achieves, they actually sound like a “band” in the proper sense of the word, Matt’s singing and melodies don’t sound labored over and his lyrics are fairly interesting...not so on this album.

Yeah it's testament to how disappointing this is that I'm not shocked by that opinion.

Ok I finished the debut, it does falter a bit in the second half. Gonna up my rating for it from 2.5 to 3 for now.

Its not touching that stretch from Alligator through Trouble but ill take it over SWB.. At its best this has some nice ideas at its worst its just unassuming indie rock.
