It doesn't matter how good the lyrics are if the song as a whole isn't that great

tbh the only bad part about the chorus in Stepping Stones is the "I didn't mean to you use you all as my stepping stones" (I guess it's technically the punchline, but it's just a bad punch line), that part just doesn't flow at all and falls flat on its face, don't know how Em of all people had a flow as bad as that, even if it is just a chorus

hol up aren’t lyrics like the focal point of rap

They are but I still find it pretty easy to ignore lyrics in rap. My mind is wired to pay 90% of my attention to the instrumental side of things. Usually when I listen to rap I just sit and pick the beats apart, as well as the actual sound of the lyrics (voice, flow, etc.)

Ignoring them doesn't mean they are irrelevant lol
That's like saying you're ignoring the instrumentals on a Metallica record and just focus on how the vocals sound.

I didn’t say they’re irrelevant. But, when it comes down to it, if the lyrics are amazing but the beat is completely uninteresting, I’m not listening to that track again. Whereas if the lyrics are merely just kind of there because they need to be, but the beat is fire, you bet your ass I’m spinning that track again. And I get where youre coming from with that comparison, but it really makes no sense. I think what you meant was only focusing on the lyrics to a Metallica song, as I listen to the instrumental and sound of vocals most dominantly, don’t care what genre of music it is.
That being said, fantastic lyrics obviously improve a piece of music, but merely being passable doesn’t really make it less enjoyable for me to a huge degree.
