This album literally sounds like watered down arena rock. If it werent the people who made The Albatross i feel like we'd all be shitting on this thing.

finally listened all the way through. This feels really overblown but I definitely prefer it on second listen, maybe it'll grow?

I can't even bring myself to listen to it again, tbh. I don't like most of the songs that get listed as favorites and the songs I do like are just okay. Curious as to what the future holds for these guys; this seems to be liked by many, at least around here.

I almost always rate after one listen, and then I change it over time

One listen ratings are fine for albums that aren't dense, but an album like this one or (to stray from the genre for a moment) Converge, reveal layers of intricacy or lyrical depth that may have been overlooked on first go around. I myself usually dig deep on first listen with lyrical analysis and what not. Then I'll go back to tracks one by one too and garner them careful and individualized attention. At least that's my take.

If I rated this first listen I would’ve given it a 2 so

I'd say for long time fans of the band, this warrants a few listens to shake off the shock of the change in sound. Especially in the vocal department.

I listened to this three times. But, to answer your question, it is fairly often that I will rate upon first listen especially given the genre or band is one I am familiar with. I know what I like so it isn't hard to get a fair impression immediately in most cases. Sometimes I know I'll need to listen a couple times if I really want to narrow down a rating but it just depends on the album and sometimes it isn't worth the time, tbh.

I enjoy the experimentation on this but their other 2 records have more heart.

Ratings are whatever but I feel I can’t have a true opinion on something until I’m at least familiar with each song by memory to some degree

^same, I’ve learned that everyone forms opinions at different times in the listening process tho, it would seem
I just prefer to have a stable opinion before I rate
It actually irks me a little more when people label things as a classic first listen, than ppl who just says something blows after one listen
