Jesus, I thought the hype was being overplayed but this is by far their strongest since "Crack the Skye". I love how this incorporates the massive epicness of "Crack the Skye" with the heaviness of "Leviathan". Definitely one of their best albums.

I like Crack the Skye more but I wonder how much of that has to do with novelty. I really enjoy this album, and if it was my first exposure to Mastodon I wonder if it would actually be my favorite. It seemed like the last two albums allowed all the members to explore their own ideas kind of separately and on this album they took what they learned and brought everything together as a band playing to their strengths as best they could. Everything here just sounds so dialed in and refined.

That's good to hear. I don't know how Dailor can play drums on songs like that or Dry Bone Valley, Motherload, etc. and even manage to sing halfway decent at all. That shit is commendable purely on an aerobic level.

Pretty good album yeah. I don't know this band super well so I can't tell who in the hell is singing half the time. Who sings the chorus on Roots Remain? Is that Brent?

Honestly, "Show Yourself" is not that bad of a song. It's not a magnum-opus level track like ...Any song off Crack the Skye, but it rocks hard nonetheless. Maybe not a top-10 Mastodon track, but not bad.

I typically like the poppy Mastodon songs but that one irks me a little, maybe it will grow.

Signed up to comment on this: Even though it's not blowing me away like some of their earlier albums such as Crack the Skye did, I keep listening and the songs keep opening up.
