Hell yeah Nomos.

First play through done. Wow. That was really nice. Very restrained and mature. Layered and atmospheric and passionate. Aces. I love stumbling upon stuff like this. I'll give it a few more listens today. What a (late) find.

If you wish for something more doom-influenced but still with a similar sound you can also check Night Is the New Day. Some songs are definitely doom in my books (especially Nephilim)

I have a feeling that I won't be disappointed if I work backwards. However I reaaaaally like their sound here. Not big into doom, but I'll check it out regardless, because these guys are great.

Oh my god. I discover something that clicks this much with me maybe...once, twice a year, if I'm lucky? This isn't just good. This is great. The compositions are beautiful. Everything about this is so...thoughtful. I have a ton of respect for these guys after just listening to this album alone. I'm so happy I found this. Thank you Sputnik. This is why I come here.

Yeah, everything from Viva Emptiness onward has a similar prog/alternative/doom sound. Honestly, I think more bands should explore the concept of "progressive doom metal". That shit can sound amazing in the right hands, as we can hear from a band like this

It's always great when there's a new Katatonia fan. Awesome that you're enjoying The Fall Of Hearts Nomos. I'd suggest going chronologically backwards starting w/the previous album Dead End Kings. While not as grandiose as TFOH, IMO it's pretty similar in style of that album albeit much more digestive to sit through at 48 minutes and less prog-ish.
SoccerRiot, you might be onto something w/the concept of "progressive doom metal" or as I've termed it "doom prog". I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't really become a "thing" yet, but if anyone knows of a band (or bands) that comes close or would fit the description, I'm all ears.

Well to Egarran's credit, I was somewhat surprised at the big leap in genre shift from Night Is The New Day which was at the time the newest Katatonia album when I discovered them and then after listening to The Great Cold Distance and later Dead End Kings when it was released months later, going back and listened to their oldest album I've heard up to that point which was Brave Murder Day.
It wasn't THAT huge of a shock in music evolution considering how similar their evolution has been to their BFF's Opeth...though I'd argue that Katatonia was the most successful band of the two to do a genre shift.

I don't understand, but I appreciate the credit.

I was referring to your point of it not being a good idea to recommend a newer Katatonia fan one of their older albums (DODS and BMD).

Yeah man, even Brave Murder Day isn't an album I would start with as fantastic as it. They made such a massive stylistic jump that you're best starting off with The Great Cold Distance to get a good idea of what they usually sound like.

I'd say the best way to approach Katatonia is probably to just spin the latest one released because similarities aside they're all kind of one-offs in their own way

True, but I honestly think this one is the least accessible of their newer sound. I realize it varies by person but this one was more of a grower than say NITND for me, which was a much more immediate album. But at the end of the day, Night is the new Day, Dead End Kings, and this are all fantastic records, and you can't really go wrong starting with any of them.

I couldn't get into Dead End Kings at all, but I better give it another chance.

Not even jammed this but aside from BMD and most of DEK, this band snoozes real hard.
