I'd just prefer if they approached those themes with a little bit more maturity lyrically. This could have been written by a 13 year old to be honest.

Okay yes sorry that was lazy bait and this is wonderfully constructed and I like it, but agreed with Reefa on lyrics for the time being. I can feel a melancholy/sadness of sorts too, but I'm not sure how much of that is specific to the music and how much is bleeding over from the saccharine content here in contrast to the horrible broken daydream of the Brian Wilson story
good album!!

wow ok thank god. And yeah I can agree the lyrics are far from amazing. But when combined with such powerful arrangements and harmonies they do feel very sincere and impactful for me. Like “close your eyes and listen to my heart beat, listen, listen, listen” is not a great lyric but in the context of that song with those slowly rising strings it’s an amazing moment

The lyrics are perfectly suitable for this album. There’s a youthful energy to to them. I’d say the same for the music. It’s fun. Nobody’s finding enlightenment with the lyrics to sloop John b, but let me tell you, they are fun to sing loud.

God Only Knows has some interesting lyrics. When he says if you ever leave me, life will still go on, it seems like he’s saying he doesn’t care, but really he’s just acknowledging the inevitability of having to continue on through life without having what he wants. An interesting idea for an otherwise innocent love song. I also like the “the more we talk about it it only makes it worse to live without it, but let’s talk about it” line in Wouldn’t It Be Nice. But it’s definitely a case of the music elevating otherwise unremarkable lyrics
