Well, no, there's definitely melodeath that I actually like with pretty much no reservations involved. It's just that this album in particular has way more in common with like...Todessehnsucht or Order and Punishment than anything else.

When it was released has nothing to do with the fact that Red in the Sky still has more in common with it than any melodeath.

Godless Years and Defiance (hell, even Sky Turned Red) are rather comparable stylistically and Atrocity's first two albums were pretty big influences at this point of the band's existence. Same with Atheist and the only other band in the Swedish scene that really had as big of an appreciation for them was Afflicted.

intestine baalism is probably the best but that’s essentially just death metal.

garden of shadows is cool. a canorous quintet is cool. sentenced’s second album north from here is cool.

can’t really think of much else tbh.
