The Raven has Luminol and Watchmaker, which are better than anything on here, including Ancestral

Luminol yes ok, but that song is pretty much the peak of his solo work. This holds up better end-to-end, not nearly as much of a highlight album

Luminol, Remainder the Black Dog and Raider II are best Williamson

This might be my fav SW solo record, on a similar level as Insurgentes and TTB. Love the female vocals as well

Insurgentes is one of my favorites as well. It's song oriented, but still experimental

Insurgentes is dark, raw and wears its influences on its sleeve.

GFD is more freeform, hits closer to heart and is also more refined than Insurgentes.

TRTRTS is more intelligent and intricate, is astonishing in execution, sleek production, retro aesthetic

HCE is hardcore sadness. I dare say, none of his solo albums is as emotional as HCE, from start to finish, AND is not slyly copying King Crimson and the '70s vault.

TTB is fun and poppy, but no

Futurebites - pending

I like and mostly agree with your analysis Myth, though I'm not sure how much more refined GfD is than Insurgentes. It sounds more sprawling and adventurous to me, less consistently song focused the way Insurgentes is.

TRTRTS sounds more refined to me than both, almost to a fault as it can be pretty straightforward and predictable despite being a tribute to '70s prog. Lots of the album sounds pretty modern imo, aside from most of Liminol and The Holy Drinker.

HCE continues being refined and ups the melancholy from the Raven ballads for the whole album, being the best and most emotional impact album of his solo career. TtB is a wonderful explosion of colorful pop/art rock with some electronic flourishes.

If I had to explain to someone the style of GfD, I would find it much easier than the style of Insurgentes, so that's why it's more refined. Also, there is grit in Insurgentes, it's not a ''beutiful'' album in the way GfD is, there's always something off. The atmosphere is wholly different. GfD is dark in a jazzy way, and that immediately makes it warmer. Only song that reaches Insurgentes levels of claustrophobia is Index, live version.
