Heritage was more inspired and ambitious and I definitely agree about its autumnal atmosphere, but both albums have a lot of Opeth's characteristic songwriting tropes despite almost completely abandoning their signature style.

I commented this on an other thread but as almost nobody saw it, I thought I should repost it here:
I'm trying to love this album but there's always something that will turn me off. You see, there's me, minding my own business listening to GR, and then, while Harlequin Forest was playing, I heard something way familiar. At about 8.40 there's a riff playing which is almost the same -if not completely- with a theme played towards the end of Moon Above, Sun Below. It kinda disappointed me.

Yeah Moon Above, Sun Below rehashes a lot of their dm stuff. If you listen closely they even have layers of heavy
dissonant chords for the rhythm section near the beginning of the song, like in BWP. It's reasons like that that Heritage is
just more legit than this in some ways.

Yeah. I had high hopes for this after reading that review many moons ago (the one we all know), but now I just feel betrayed, waiting for sth like a 4.5 or even a 5. But don't we all expect the best album ever from bands we adore?

this definitely grew on me with subsequent listens, there's definitely some really cool stuff here, it's just not up to par with past material though.

It's good but not great. I really haven't jammed it like I thought I would, the problem with a 70's sound is that you're ways looking back to the past so the ability to move forward is impeded.
I'm all for this current incarnation of the band but the quality has to be there.
