Although tbh I don't think aligning quality with time works that way - two of the 4.5s I've been jamming lately (new Cave + the Knife) are kinda patchy and off/on, but their great bits earn and hold that rating

Interesting. Because I always thought it does. Mainly song-wise, of course. Like, if I love half of the songs an album and the other half does nothing for me, it would probably land somewhere in the 3-3.5 range.

Depends how great the good songs are. I guess one of my favourite albums is Dire Straits' Making Movies: seven songs, one of which is the atrocious closer, another is the mediocre second last track. The rest is 10/10 gold so it balances out as a 4.5
