@kalk oh shit really? I didn't realize that opinions were subjective as was people's ability to be emotionally moved by something. What the fuck have I been doing all my life?

"What the fuck have I been doing all my life?"
Getting salty about people not experiencing the same emotions from an album that you have?

How is me genuinely asking how an album isn't emotional me being salty? Lol don't be so sensitive and have a dialogue.

this isn't my favorite Haken album, but I'll be damned if Cockroach King isn't one of the best songs ever

All of this album is pretty stellar. That build in "Somebody" is fantastic. I totally bought this album on a whim for my brother years ago, and then when I listened to it myself I almost kept it haha.

This has to be one of the most frustrating albums for me tbh.
I always come back, because I want to love it, but stuff like Falling Back To Earth just isn't that gripping imo. Idk, it's like slightly modernized Dream Theater with a servicalbe singer. Definetly like every other album of theirs more.

I agree with that take overall but Falling Back to Earth is one of the most gripping tracks in their entire discography, let alone this album imo.

So, trying this again.
The Path really has nice melodies and I dig the stipped back approach here. It works so well as an intro.
Atlas Stone - I always thought this one was rather boring, but this time around I appreciated every little detail. It's a great little song and a continuation of The Path. Perfect for the opener spot tbh. Really good so far.
Cockroach King. One of their best. The first big highlight imo. It's their Gentle Giant song.
In Memoriam. A prog metal track. High energy, but nothing too memorable.
Because It's There has always been a favorite of mine. I dig the autotuned vocal harmonies and the melodies and electronic drums. This album is the first time they processed Ross' vocals that heavily. It always grates me a bit, but it works on these more electronic tracks.
Falling Back To Earth. Some guy once told me it's the best prog metal track of the 2010s. I strongly disagree. It's a big one here though, like, a center piece. It has a very catchy chorus and is quite memorable. It's fun, you know, but really no big deal, like some other prog epics from the 2010s are.
As Death Embraces is one I just can never remember. I think it's easy to call it the most forgettable one on this basis. However, it's nice as long as it's running.
Pareidolia has always been their Tool song with a big chorus for me. And that's cool. It's a bit boring though, not the most interesting song and a bit too lengthy.
Same for the closer Somebody. I dig the vocal thing where the emphasized syllable shifts. Really cool. But the verses are a bit boring. It works well as a closer though.
So yea, that's the Mountain, I guess. I looses some steam towards the end imo. It's modern, well executed Dream Theater light, with some cool influences from Gentle Giant. But really this album isn't all that memorable after Cockroach King.

Atlas Stone has always been their absolute best imo. the song feels like such an adventure, it gets me all smiley. and it sticks the landing a little too well
@kalkwiese you actually sound pretty positive about this overall but then slap on a "not memorable after Cockroach King" lol
