I honestly do agree that this as good as music can get if its entertainment value coems directly and purely from the emotions put into it. There's a lot of anger here, with some bitterness mixed in, and it's true that the members were pretty damn angsty at the time. I'd say early Mudvayne, as an example (Ld.50, maybe), was similar in sound but strove to gain entertainment value through songwriting and technicality as well. This is why their debut is far better loved by critics. Also because there's no maggot fandom.
Vol.3 is in some ways IOWA's polar opposite, in that it's far more mature, with less f-bombs, somewhat better production, and generally speaking better songwriting.
And with regards to the discussion about vocals, I personally find that Taylor's best moments are on House of Gold and Bones, pt1&2. Excluding Iowa, of course. Save for those records, he's really taken a bit of decline ever since Vol.3. He was fine on The Gray Chapter though, IMO.
