In terms of community and reviews Sput is definitely better. For everything else, such as ratings, database, lists, finding new music etc., RYM is significantly better.

"For everything else, such as ratings"

could you clarify what you mean by this?

Specifically regarding ratings? Well it kind of goes hand in hand with the superior database and also the fact that RYM has a far larger amount of users meaning that more 'obscure' releases that have littler to no ratings on this site can have like 50-100 ratings on RYM, meaning it's often better to check ratings for albums you're interested in checking out on RYM rather than on here. Also RYM allows you to have different ratings systems, which has its benefits.

yea i see what u mean

well that's the theory anyway

"meaning it's often better to check ratings for albums you're interested in checking out on RYM rather than on here"

in practice there's also tons of users who literally never rated anything that isnt classical or baroque above a 2.5, or make retarded mental gymnastics that try to justify the fact that out of thousands of ratings nothing they've ever heard deserves more than a 3.5

and yes there's lots of them

which especially damages obscure and niche releases because they'll usually have more ratings from these kinds of cunts than from actual enthusiasts

mmm, yeah, that might be true, I still don't like how their community is like "OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD: 3.5"

"RYM hates metal so yeah they automatically suck."

incidentally my complaints are based on observations from numerous genres that arent metal

i know i mostly post in metal threads but trust me thats not the particular bias that makes me absolutely loathe rym. if anything metal albums seem to be closer to the deserved rating (though still underrated)

yeah I feel like ratings are too centralized on that site to the point where you don't get the best idea of what is actually "the best" from each genre apart from some really obvious classics

charts are still great though and probably one of my top 3 resources for finding new shit

except the tag system is bunk. look up stoner rock and half the shit isn't stoner rock. look up hardcore punk and half the shit isn't hardcore punk

Yeah, the charts are pretty useless on here for that exact reason. Best way to find new music is to get recs from people with good taste.

Should I bother getting a RYM account, though? Like is it worth having an account on both sites?

At least I don't have one, I've been lurking on the site tons of times yet I don't find nothing really useful on it for me

Sputnik, other user's recs, progarchives or other specialized sites and even YouTube are good enough for me to find new music

I honestly don't use Sput for finding new music very much at all.
