What do you guys think of Careful What You Wish For and My Darling?

Just listened to them for the first time now. Concept and lyrics of Careful What You Wish For are great, rapping is rather on the lame side. My Darling's dialogue verses are cool, but otherwise nothing outstanding. I like the completely stripped production on both though. Would have been better for Relapse on the whole.

It is honest and genuine. AT TIMES. That's why Deja Vu or Underground are great songs. But most of the time he's still goofing around.

I do not mean honest and genuine only in the sense of being upfront about his feelings and stuff. I mean that the goofy/weird stuff is also honest self expression and not made to appeal to a certain audience. Like the serial killer stuff: he had been through some pretty dark times and even though he doesn't speak directly about most of that, the serial killer subject matter is an indirect manifestation of it

Yeah I agree 100%. MMLP2 and Recovery feel so disingenuous to me. Recovery especially (I'm not as familiar with MMLP2) feels like something where he's trying to convince everyone he's super serious and angry again and leaves all of the silliness and quirkiness of the Slim Shady persona behind, but it's just not believable, and it's not convincing at all to me. It sounds like his heart is not in it, despite the whole thing being an effort to convince people that he really is back and into it again.

Even the lyrically awful shit here like "Insane" is more likeable to me because it kind of still sounds like he's doing what he wants to do. But I think "Stay Wide Awake", "Underground", "3 AM", and quite a few others to a lesser extent are actually really awesome tracks because he seems to just be doing what he's at least somewhat passionate about rather than trying to fit into a box. It's not a fantastic album and there are some shit tracks, but as a whole I find it to be far more enjoyable than the 2 more recent ones which I really just can't stand.

Yes, I agree on MMLP2 and Recovery as well. In the case of Recovery, it feels like how it feels when somebody tries to convince you how cool they are. It just doesn't work. You do not become cool by telling people you are cool, you become cool by doing cool things without thinking they will make people think you are cool. MMLP2 has some good songs, but it's mixed in with some pretty awful Recovery style things.

A lot of the rapping on here is just him playing around with his rhyming and wordplay skills, and of course that can be disappointing to somebody who expected more social commentary and stuff from him

Recovery isn't great, but at least he left out the utter crap of his Encore/Relapse days. It's the first LP of his that has not one five star track for me, but as someone who favoures The Eminem Show I liked that it featured some rock-styled tracks. Talkin 2 Myself, Won't Back Down, Going Through Changes, 25 To Life, Love The Way You Lie, all great songs that to me just sound better than anything on Relapse simply cause of their musical direction.

It lacks any real highs, but apart from the completely crappy No Love and Space Bound it's just not as annoying as this and Encore.

Going Through Changes is great, one of Eminem's best songs honestly.

While the "serial killer" tracks here aren't bad, Em's accent just makes them lose their 'edge', making them sound more like joke tracks than what they are meant to sound like, especially with 3 AM, which sounds like Em's parodying himself most of the time.

It sounds like he's still doing the accent in Ass Like That...
