The fact that people are still talking about this album does show how much of an impact it had, whether you liked it or not.

I never said it didn't have a large impact, and I personally think it's a really good album.

It actually shows more how many little kids our country really does rear each day, spewing their inexcusable nonsense about it.
The album, like one person near the beginning of this said, would have easily gone under the radar if not for the publicity GD's new gimmick heaved forth. This Message Edited On 12.05.06

this album was never about selling out and just getting even richer, it was about three characters(The Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, and Whatsername) it was about how all of us can see one of those characters in ourselves, and the people around us. It doesn't matter to me if you don't like the album, I thought it was going to end up a classic like "Rocket to Russia" by the Ramones, or "London Calling" by the Clash, but whatever. If you don't like it, why are you here, I don't go tell all of the Metallica fans that Kirk Hammet sucks(I'm not saying he does he's a pretty good guitarist) but really I would like to see anyone that has better lyrics than those on the album. I've been listening since Dookie in second grade, I own every CD, and I'm not just latching on to the new thing, I've been here before, I know about it. This album comes down to raw emotion, punk, emo, or neither whatever it is, it's still my favorite Green Day album

I just have one thing to say about the comments that have been made on my account. Someone in my study hall has stolen my password, and made comments about this album, please ignore them, they are a little embrassing to me and to all fans of The Clash. As for my opinion, it's a good album, and whatever I liked it, and if you don't that's cool too

That the band changed their image for the record is no doubt but the reviewer should keep in mind that Billie Joe's natural hair colour IS black (could be his wife's influence as much as the label's).
Green Day have always been upbeat and fun, but the fact they went political was a natural extension of their influences (The Who, Bob Dylan, The Buzzcocks, The Ramones).
Great Review - Great Debate - Great Album!

thats true and perhaps its good for band s to change an image to keep what they do from going stale. in green days case, i think that they already have such a good fan base that this odd change to some more political lyrics does not faze most of their fans at all. its just the boarderline people (like me and maybe some debating this)who are scrathing their heads in confusion, somewhat dazed and annoyed with the politics in the music.

I really don't like this, and before people start raging, I have heard the album in its entirety and I stand by my opinion.

Considering that Green Day are pop punk and pop is short for "popular" this struck me as a singularly stupid thing to say.

Compare Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King with their later album Edge of Thorns. OMG!!!1! Savatage sold out!!

If you guys think that they JUST became political to make this album, then you guys don't know Green Day very much. Billy Joe, the lead singer has been campaigning against the war since it began. Before this album came out he was on the Rock Against Bush album. Songwriters tend to write about things that are affecting their daily lives, and at the time, the war and the president seemd to be affecting Billy Joes life, so he wrote music on how he dissapproved the direction the country was going in. As for their music, I think it deffinately has matured from the same 3 power chords they all used to play. They now have more depth and more emotion in their songs. People who don't know anything about music shouldn't critique a band.

Quite a few people actually. Most of them don't even own Green Day albums, but they really wanted to sound like they knew what they were talking about.

Green Day have always been politically active. Their music was more commonly about social issues of apathy, but they've always been politically astute individuals.
And just so you know, politics is a legitimate topic for artists to discuss. "Let your music do the speaki-" Shut the fuck up. Do you have any idea how self-important and pretentious that sounds?

There are pop punk bands that are not popular.

I think it deffinately has matured from the same 3 power chords they all used to play. Just wanted to point that out that this album still has the same 3 chords they've always been playing, just at different paces 'n what not.
