dub...I wouldn't start with this album if you're just getting into Metal because your expectations are going to be crushed and you will give up on metal.

This album isn't bad, but the way it is praised on this site you'd think it could actually cause premature ejaculation.

I'd say start with lighter stuff...aka Killswitch Engage or All That Remains (both of their newest releases are good starting Metal albums).

These are not as good as this muscally but are much easier to get into. Follow those with heavier stuff like this if you want. It's definately worth a listen but don't over-engorge yourself with expectations.

I'm not really trying to get into metal or anything, I just see the reviews and the comments on this album, and then hear that the band has 70's & jazz influences as well as clean harmonies instead of just constant power solos and breakdowns which means this album could actually be a one of my soon-to-be favorite albums. If this album is great, I'll try more Opeth and that might lead to more metal for the dubster. If not, I'll look around for another album that gets praise like this one...

Hope that gives a little insight into what I'm thinking.

The fact that you refer to yourself as the dubster makes you officially cool.

Disillusion-Back to Times of Splendor is where you should go for a masteriece.

The Funeral Portrait and title track are the only two great songs on this album!

dub, if you want more of a jazzy influence in the music, i'd start with Morningrise or My Arms, Your Hearse before this because those albums feature the strongest influences of jazz. You could start with Orchid too, but you might be underwhelmed.

only avanged sevenfold was successful at making a 8 minute plus song...I couldnt stand through 4 minutes of this crap

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest Avenged Sevenfold fans on this site, and I enjoy all their albums (WTF being one of my all-time favorites). You're comparing two completely different bands, genres, and styles. This takes patience and tolerance, A7X doesn't. So yes, Avenged Sevenfold may sound more appealing than Opeth to the musically dis-inclined and ignorant. Any 8 minutes off of this album is easily more genius than anything in A7X's discography though.

And um dubster (if you dont mind me calling you that), youre right on the 70's and jazz stuff, but you really don't know what you're getting into. This album reeks of pure evil and its heavy as hell. Just don't expect to find a lot of similarities with jam and classic rock.

haha dubster...i like it.

And yeah I wasn't expecting Miles Davis or anything. And it's too late, I already got the album, I just gotta wait till I get home tonight to listen to it. To expect a metal album to sound like classic or jam rock is just plain dumb. This Message Edited On 04.17.08

This blew me away first listen, I had never heard anything quite like it when I first got it. It should do the same to you.

But also when I first got into Opeth, I coudltn listen to much else for a little while because this made everything else that I listened to at the time seem much simpler than this...lol.

Heh... same exact thing happened to me. I just stopped listening to everything else for like 2 months. very few bands have ever done that to me.

Yeah this album is brilliant. It's probably one of the classic metal albums, and I just hope that in 10/20 years, when we recall the beginning of the 21st century, people will look back and say "there was this band called Opeth, they released an album called Blackwater Park that when it was released just shattered the genre and turned it upside down." That would be cool. What Iron Maiden is to modern day power metal, maybe Opeth could be to progressive metal, death metal, all sorts of music in 20 years.

I wouldn't say any Opeth albums have a real jazz influence. 70's prog influence maybe, but even that is not glaringly apparent. This album is great and I would recommend it for people getting into metal, but it does wear thin after a while. I'm kinda the opposite of a lot of people here. Most people say this album gets better with every listen even years down the road, but for me Opeth can get tiresome if I listen to them too much.

If I got into metal with BTBAM and BG, people can get into with this album. This album is good for people getting into metal because of the soft parts and clean vocals. This Message Edited On 04.17.08

This album is pretty good, I might up it again to a 4 at best. People need to get off Opeth's dick and actually try some other bands in the metal genre that can do things just as well as these guys.

I remember my first listen on this disc. After the first few minutes of riffing and growling in Leper Affinity, when the pace shifts perfectly into that melodic solo, I knew this album would be awesome.

I wish I could like this album half as much as most of you seem to, I really do, but this struggles to get a three with me. I have no idea why, it's just a chore to get through, and I've tried. I listened to it fully a few nights in a row, just falling asleep to it, no change, I just discovered that the last track was awesome. That's it, even Bleak has grown off me now.

Opeth is the band I started with for metal. They were the first band with harsh vocals I got into other than prog or crappy metalcore and for a while I didn't listen to any other metal, but I've been finding some great metal recently and thus seeing how Opeth isn't the only good metal band. Cryptopsy has made me love death metal and Burzum has made me want black metal. Any recommendations along those lines? Nice avatar btw, Balls.
