You'd make Aiwaz so happy with that statement. He's the biggest Farfalla fan ever.

Agreed by the way, it rules.

It's cool that people are checking the early releases, especially this one as the average may put some people off. Underrated.

I usually go chronologically, so i get the closest experience to that which a fan of the early days might have had. It's always great to hear the evolution of bands. Also a 3.7 avg is still pretty damn good, i'm just not to eager to get into the Heritage to Sorceress stretch. ICV seems more interesting from what i've read

Heritage is their best non-metal release by a long shot for me. Very curious what you think about that one (and In Cauda too!).

Where in their discog are you currently?

Right here. I usually do one album a week if i deep dive a band, i will probably speed up when i get to the non-metal releases for the sake of the concert

I do know some of their bigger songs of BWP and GR though, but i like to give albums their fair amount of time

Totally understand, great idea. So you've got some idea of where they are going. Hard to escape a band of this caliber of course.

I just wasn't as much into the more "extreme" metal genres before 2015, and now that i like quite a few of those bands which you could sort under that umbrella term, i actually like harsh vocals now quite a bit.

A lot of Opeth fans are instantly recognizable in public, because they often look like a lovechild of Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson haha

I'm now trying to imagine what Steven Wilson must look like by deducting Akerfeldt from myself, it's a confusing and ultimately futile process.

I look nothing like either one of them but that doesn't matter, the picture of this being true is amazing.

Occasionally I look in the mirror, see the beard/long straight hair and feel like I could pass for Scandanavian. In reality probably not, my 'European' stock comes from much further south. Haha.

I always want to like this one more than I do tbh. Never been sure what to rate it. I don’t mind the more raw production but it does feel a bit amateurish in several places

It is. It's super raw and awkward and immature. But that's part of its charm I would say. Amazing album.

It does have that charm. Will there be more piano tracks like on here in the following records? The piano sounds rather bright and relatively cheap but the playing is beautiful

There’s not a ton of piano. They don’t have a full time keyboard player until Per Wilberg joins the band for Ghost Reveries, and he mostly just does atmospheric organ flourishes until the prog era.

Steven Wilson adds a little bit on BWP and damnation I believe, but the big focus on BWP was creating atmosphere with guitars and not keyboards.

Morningrise is raw like this one, but more meandering and melodic, less traditional metal influences but that Northern European traditional feel that someone mentioned is very much there on that one. Akerfeldt jokes about how he was in a super pretentious phase and brought a lute to the sessions but Dan Swano discouraged him from using it lol.

MAYH is heavy, focused, and aggressive and the first part of the big prog death trio from these guys that initially brought them fame along with SL and BWP which are their peak IMO. SL is more mature, melodic and progressive than MAYH but less aggressive, BWP steps up the production budget and atmosphere.

GR was their peak mainstream market penetration I believe

Thanks for that quite elaborate answer! I'm really looking forward to MAYH for some reason, the album cover intrigues me
