I just find it pretty boring and bland. Could have been so much better.

exact same thing i think about heritage. things can meander on here a bit, but at least the songs have purpose

Both rule. I just find myself more in the mood for this.

I don't really find any moments on Heritage boring, I find it consistently more interesting/entertaining than quite a few other Opeth albums.

its hard for me to get over how slow nepenthe and haxprocess are, especially nepenthe. why don't they

go anywhere? what's appealing about them? why are they so quiet from a production standpoint?

What's wrong with music being slow and quiet? There's no destination as such they're just consistently interesting in terms of both musicianship and structure. A song doesn't need to have a climax per se, in fact it's more important to be enjoyable and entertaining throughout, which both of those songs are (for me at least).

i agree with all of that jamie. nothing wrong with slow and quiet and all that stuff. i guess i just disagree with the songs being "consistently interesting". the quiet parts are so quiet to the point that i turn up my volume bc literally nothing is happening. silence can be used effectively in music, so i'm not against it, i just don't understand it on heritage. nepenthe is just silence and then out of nowhere that guitar part that could be cool i guess but it just doesn't make sense. like, its original and cool, but that's all it has going for it. then the pointless wanky solo

Just depends on what appeals to you I guess. I find both of those songs captivating and the quiet moments contribute to the atmosphere and help keep the whole thing interesting.

yeah this mostly boils down to a "what floats your boat?" type discussion and its best left at that at this point. at least between us jamie. i respect that you're not sitting here telling me "they're never gonna bring back the growls, get over it"

Agreed, we're never gonna agree on Heritage (or Opeth in general) but I respect your opinion. Yeah of course not, it's obvious that you're not just some butthurt fanboy who wants them to bring the metal back. I'd much rather have a proper discussion like we've been having (and had in the past) anyway.

I think Opeth have matured nicely over the years and I'd wager that a good chunk of the people hating on their newer sound are merely upset that they're not the same band that brought us Blackwater Park.

Yea Heritage is really solid. In terms of their slower style I like this a little better though.
