Was in the mood to put this back on and jam it again even though I've listened to this album straight through at least 67 different times now (according to my iTunes stats anyway - I know it's probably close to double that since I had this on CD in near constant rotation from it's release until like 2007). Their first 3 albums are so good, I don't think it's at all a stretch to say that by this point they have continued to hold up well enough to be considered new-era classics. This one, though, closely edges out In Keeping Secrets... in my opinion as their true masterpiece -- the mix/production work on this album still manages to surprise me with something I hadn't consciously noticed before, nearly 20 years later now, and it's always sounded great.



The *only* downside to this album is that it's difficult for me to listen to this without getting upset about Mic Todd not being in the band anymore. Wish he could have his redemption arc already

IMO, this is absolutely Coheed's crowning achievement. It has the right amount of quirk, technicality, atmosphere, conceptuality, and woah-oh-oh-oh's to make it just a fun ass listen no matter what.



And even then, I'll go a step further and say that although I love the album's playfulness and catchiness - these guys absolutely flexed so fucking hard on The Willing Well, especially Part I. That song is the one I always show to people who are like "Coheed? You mean that pop punk band?"

This is mind-numbingly boring.

It probably is a 4.5 but the back half of this album is something special. Mother May I through to Final Cut is pure pop prog bliss.
