I realize nobody is really having honest discussions here, it’s sputnik, I get it. But I’m constantly blown away by the lyrics. I’m blown away by the copious amounts of instruments present from front to back. I’m blown away by how Kendrick sounds like 5 different people on this album (dude could be a voice actor if he isn’t already). I’m blown away by just how big and epic this album sounds. It is long, it’s musically complex, and lyrically compelling. If you gave this anything less than a 3.5, please come forward and explain yourself.

"it’s musically complex"
Uh, no? The most "complex" thing here is that jazz track that is one of the worst pieces here.

Anyway, I guess can explain myself as well as you just did with my rating. I don't care about the lyrics, some of the instrumentals are alright, some of them aren't, (the first track in particular is quite good) but as with most hip hop every track is too long (honestly, hip hop on average should have tracks that are like 2 minutes long) and even if Kendrick changes his voice or something like that I don't find his rapping interesting. It's a bit too long and too simple for my taste. Oh, and Mortal Man is just really bad.

2 minute long for hip hop songs?? That’s crazy funny
|

Why? Really, why? Because "muh lyrics"?

I don't think shorter tracks would bode well for an album like this. Pretty much every track/verse on the album has a purpose and pushes the album's narrative or arch forward. Cutting down tracks and removing verses would take away from the grandeur that makes the album so appealing in the first place imo.

I have no words to describe how idiotic this statement is

"Why? Really, why? Because "muh lyrics"?"
Why should classical pieces be longer than 2 minutes? Really, why? Because "muh piano"?

So musically - yeah the jazz track is is just fucking great jazz with Kendrick’s fastest rapping over it, but what about Institutionalized? U? For Sale? These are all far from generic. I feel like I’m spiraling down the chaotic recesses of his brain on songs like those. He is able to convey so many emotions and vices on this album. Lust (Wesley’s Theory), cautious optimism (Alright), confusion (U), self-love (i), and that doesn’t even touch on the social/political songs. Lastly, I’m a sucker for concept albums and I love how the songs are connected by the spoken word pieces that get more elaborate each time. The album is very cohesive and well-thought out. You can truly tell how gruesomely long he spent putting each song together. Fuck it’s 2am goodnight

@Drifter
Because usually classical pieces are complex enough to be longer than 2 minutes, even if there's a bunch of classical pieces that aren't even two minutes long; hip hop is in general a simple genre with over-reliance on lyrics (and lyrics aren't music). And the comparation doesn't make a lot of sense because the piano is an instrument, lyrics are not.

@Buttboy
No, I'm pretty sure that's not even great jazz, far from it. I never said the word "generic", I described most of the music as "too simple" for me to find it gratifying (and even then, I do find things here to be enjoyable). And should I repeat that I don't care about lyrics?

If this music is too simple....what rappers are you able to enjoy? Not to say Kendrick is the best musician or whatever, but I feel like most dudes have pretty simple beats and predictable song structures. DAMN has that, but not this album.
