not doing alt picking limits you so much. there gets to a point were no matter how good you are at downstrokes, you can never be faster or more efficient than someone with even an average alt picking hand. and I know cos I only did downstrokes for the fist 5 years of playing guitar

I've never been good at 100% downpicking and when I do it, I am very slow. I do economy picking almost 100% of the time, doesn't matter what the song is.
James is writing songs specifically for his technique though. I'm sure he makes sure he can physically perform the song before going into the studio or whatever. I agree with what you said though, there's obviously a max speed one can achieve by doing all downpicks.
