TDAG was just a fucking wrecking ball, and it didn't seem to matter what you were into. At least within my stomping grounds, the metal guys like me who despised Deja and the rest of the scene grudgingly admitted how impressive it was just as much as all the emo kids who couldn't fathom the depths to which they had expanded. I've mentioned it before, but it was one of the biggest singular moments of change I can remember, and possibly the most far reaching in terms of cross-genre interest.
You know, excluding the Marshall Mathers LP.

>I didn't do it to avoid getting made fun of, I did it because I was personally tired of associating my username directly with the song/band.
I find that tremendously sad. I like Brand New, and as a Long Islander, I was always happy to see them do well. But they were never one of my core bands, one of those bands that you grow up building some of your identity around, for me.
When all of this mess came out, I really felt bad for their core fans, especially since they had been waiting so long for them to put out a new album, go on tour, etc. They didn't do anything wrong, and to have it all turn to crap after all of that waiting was a shame.

"but I "missed" The Devil and God. I didn't listen to it when it came out, I didn't attach my teenage angst or identity to it, so I'm not as big a fan of it (or this band) as other people."
Seconded, not trying to necessarily make the nostalgia argument but I do feel like you kinda had to be there. Listening to it now, it's good but doesn't do much else for me. SF however was right up my alley from the get-go.

@Diva I hear ya, I was definitely among the most disappointed "core fans" when that news broke. I think my taste has expanded twenty-fold since I first started here though, so to have my entire "brand" if you will boil down to identifying with a single artist feels narrow-sighted at best. In hindsight I wish I'd chosen a username totally independent of any musical act, but the best I can do now is burn that bridge from an identity standpoint (while still enjoying their music) and still retain the name recognition I've built over 13 years as a reviewer.
@Djang0 while I don't feel that you had to be there during TDAG's release days to appreciate it, I definitely think it could be the difference between viewing that album as a classic vs. it just being "really good". Something about watching the band evolve from emo/pop-punk to that sort of soul-shattering indie/alternative style really elevated its status in the scene. They were viewed as pioneers who had taken an entire genre and reshaped it, along with the expectations of what pop-punk bands are capable of. I think looking back at it without being there you try to understand its influence, whereas experiencing it as it's happening to you as a true game changer. Lots to love about Science Fiction too though, and the album rollout was brilliant. I'll never forget the day it dropped out of the clear blue; I literally did nothing productive for at least 48 hours haha

As a core fan of BN, that out of the blue drop was such an unbelievable high. I listened to the whole album live on Facebook through someone’s stream who had received the random unmarked disc from them. Truly magical.

Ha, I was listening to the same steam. Deja Entinder or whatever that group was called.
I found a high quality leak that same afternoon and by the time I'd unzipped the files the band was selling digital copies on their website. As a hardcore lifelong fan, it was a ridiculous adrenaline rush.

I’d say Deja Entendu is their most relistenable, but Sci fi is probably my favorite. Deja is up there though.
