I hear a ton of atmosphere within everything they do so I don't know if that's why they get the dissonant tag slapped on them. Regardless, don't really care exactly what they are, all I know is their music is fantastic

Cult of Luna are also very atmospheric but nobody describes them as dissonant. I don't know... They're very intricate and complex, but just not dissonant to me.

I'm the last person to really go deep into subgenres. I just slap this with a death metal tag and call it a day lol

If it slaps, fuck it. I do wish I could find more death metal with this much atmosphere that is anywhere near this good though. That would be rad.

"I really don't get what's so *dissonant* about them, most of their songs are in natural minor scales. Not to take anything away from their music, I love it and I'm considering bumping my scores, but they don't really come off as dissonant to me."

Shit take tbqh

There may be more dissonant bands out there, but the throatcutters clearly use dissonance as a device often enough to warrant the tag -especially from Eif to Vermis. Its just that songwriting is so good that it isnt jarring.

Yeah, their style is very cohesive and methodical, and seemingly more melodic than ever on Stare, but a lot of their work does merit the dissonant label. A lot of the atmosphere definitely comes from the post metal influence. All dissonant death isn't quite as atmospheric as them.

Their dissonance has eased up over time, I would say. EiF is dissonant af. Like damn near every riff has some kind of dissonant twist in it. Whereas on Shrines and onward, it's a bit more limited. Careful touches of it here and there

MillionDead's right too that they're very unique in how atmospheric they are despite being so dissonant. Even EiF, for all its unforgiving dryness, heaviness, and dissonance, still has a very tangible atmosphere.

Ok I'm mostly familiar with their last two releases.

""unorthodox Death Metal with the texture of futurist Black Metal" - Debemur Morti promoting Stare into Death"

Dang well that's egg on my face lol. Although they did just say "texture" I think I'm just splitting hairs now. Maybe there won't be any BM after all.
