the type of band that refuses to put ‘side a’ and ‘side b’ on their records so you always put the wrong side on first

51st place in average rating, all-time. Strange how there are more than 50 albums with averages that high, thinking about it - it's rounded up, but still surprising
appears to be 4th in total ratings, lol (at least in the top 100 for ave, not going lower)

Incredibly overrated agreed.

This has a 1.9 from Pitchfork and I can't for the life of me make sense of that slop they called a review. Not to say this is the greatest album ever but the Pitchfork review seems to take the piss and I'm just too smooth-brained to understand what that reviewer was going for back in 2001.

That place has always been a magnet for the most cringe music fans.

p4k review is pretty straightforward satire of ye olde bongbrained tool devotee

Album Rating: 3.5
Taking that perspective, I guess I get it. But my god what a hamfisted way to say "I didn't like this album". It's an interesting creative writing exercise but it is an eye-rolling piece of wankery if it's considered an album review.
|
| |
the level of wankery is a salient reflection on the album itself. doesn't necessarily redeem the reading experience, but it folds comfortably into the satire
most reviews that boil down to simple like/dislike impulses are hamfisted by nature. you either work in an informative cultural/contextual focus or some insightful analysis or get creative. not huge on the implication that being straightforward with that standpoint is typically an asset to traditional rev styles

Oh for sure. Reviews written around a theme or central element is what makes them interesting my nature. However, I feel like it's a slippery slope into self-indulgence that mitigates the intent of the review. But maybe it's way more tongue-in-cheek than I'm giving it credit for. Matching wankery for wankery, especially when that subject is a Tool album, and you're basically creating a singularity.

"you either work in an informative cultural/contextual focus or some insightful analysis or get creative."
Something I find that p4k writers are generally apt at. At least a bunch of years ago when I still checked out written reviews regularily.
