yep, was arguing with a friend earlier this week and definitely hold to GKMC being better than TPAB. both great though!
I remember a guy from cokemachineglow writing about Dark Twisted Fantasy: "suffice to say for any huge, hyped-up release the enthusiasm is a part of the enjoying. Once it wears off the records might remain pretty damned good, but you’re still just telling stories about a great party you once went to."

nah fuck all that pretentious nonsense
put on devil in a new dress again and tell me that its just hype

I know my opinion on this album lol I've listened to it ~hundreds of times. It's very very good. "devil in a new dress" is one of the best beats ever no doubt, and rick ross goes in

I get that not everyone is gonna think that "the enthusiasm is a part of the enjoying" though, but he wrote that in 2011....you probably remember 2010. people went fucking. bananas. over this record

i def feel that. the hype for this was astronomical. it was absolutely everywhere and getting the highest praise from everyone (myself included). looking back on it tho, i don't think it's worthy of all the 5s, but it's still a damn well constructed album

not that albums can't be more than the sum of their parts but when it comes down to it, "dark fantasy," "gorgeous," "hell of a life," and maybe "blame game" are like 7/10 and "runaway" is overrated to me even if it's a very good track. rest is gold. that constitutes a great album, and no real bum songs. but still. not a 5 I guess

there was hype but i for one am absolutely never swayed by popular opinion and again go back and listen to this with a clear head in 2019 and tell me that isnt bs

blame game a 7 and runaway overrated yee im dun
|

this album is like a dusty relic in the museum of hip hop, I respect it for historical purposes but I wouldn’t rank it among my favorites

this one is like the opposite of yeezus whereas everyone shat on that when it came out cause it was different then eventually everyone realized it was great this is the one that was great off the jump and in hindsight people pretending it isnt to be sofiztikated

yeah, more so than anything i remember the social significance of the album. i remember playing it late nights for my coworkers at HMV when we were doing inventory all the way through to 4am for a month straight. i remember it being played at damn near every party i attended, and how i tried to convince my naysayer friends that it was worth the hype. i can easily say the hype surrounding it was a big part of the enjoyment, for me.

yea but you dont even listen to hip hop
this kid proved my point ty

I think this is a great album and a fantastic addition to a sparkling discography, it's just, as luci said, not one of my absolute favorites. If we're talking decade I'd take, I dunno, the Tribe Called Quest album over it any day. Not necessary to pit these things against each other but I guess that's what we're talking about here

in my decade list i'll definitely have yeezus and tlop ahead of this. also an odd comparison i guess but yeah that tribe album is straight fire. one of the best return to form albums ever

you got me on the yeezus comparison though, I was at the gov ball show where he debuted everything that wasn't "black skinhead" and "new slaves" (which were debuted on SNL/the video thing he projected everywhere, yeah?) and I was like "this is Ass, this is not the direction I want kanye to take, where the melodies at" lol and now I like the album a lot
