But it's not merely an offshoot of alt rock, it's dodgy kraftwerk

ooo okay here are some albums

Stereolab - Dots and Loops (lounge with electronic inflections, imo a p notable precedent for prominent UK indie groups exploring crossovers)
Dntel - Life Is Full Of Possibilities
Supercar - Highvision (best transition I've heard any band make from a primarily altrock sound to a primarily electronic sound)
Cornelius - Point (blah blah dude's cancelled, audio engineering on this is impeccable and also comes from an indie pop/rock background)
Laika - Sounds of the Satellites (excellent trip-hop album, comparable atmosphere)
Sweet Trip - Halica (atmosphere)
Macaroom - Homephone TE (I rep this record everywhere, but it's worth it. similarities are mainly atmospheric, but there's some technical overlap)
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Async (not the first album I'd usually compare to Kid A, but I think you'll find a lot of to dig into with its treatment of alienation and ambience)
Tujiko Noriko - Make Me Hard is an interesting one because it gives me a similar sense of an artist trying to construct their own largely electronic vocabulary off the back of limited experience in the style; there's a freshness/strangeness and I guess simplicity to this that goes a distance
also, Vespertine is always worth a mention as a contemp landmark for crossover electronic and glitch integration, but y'all have heard that
"not a question being asked because nothing can be better than Kid A or more experimental mind you"
Yeah I feel you! on the same vibe, I don't prefer *all* of these and vetted a few albums I like better in favour of ones that complement what I feel as the Kid A experience, esp if they were released in the neighbouring pockets of years - so roll with this as a reclist not a 1-up list :]

Jumping into this late but I feel like at this point in time the popular music discourse has collectively moved past saying Kid A (or even Radiohead in general) is actually all that “experimental” or “groundbreaking” and instead focused on the fact that they are first and foremost just really, really great songwriters who also bring together a wider range of influences than your average rock band, and who pull those together to create a pretty unique (or at least clearly identifiable) atmosphere in their music. That is to say, I don’t think that rock nerds like myself who have limited electronic experience really like Kid A because we think it’s more experimental or better (at being electronic music) than stuff like what Johnny mentions or any number of records in the canons of ambient pop or IDM or whatever. Rather, it ends up having a large influence on people because 1) they often come across it in the most impressionable phases of music exploration and 2) all matters of genre aside, it’s just a really damn great album with interesting songwriting, and engrossing atmosphere and flow, and a clear conceptual vision. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
