Totally with zak on this one, one of their all time best and therefore a very hard 5.0.

you guys are way off the mark man....easily their most boring and pretentious (yes, pretentious) album to date.....devil's orchard is fucking terrible and it leads the way wtf.....rym has this as the lowest rated album because, well, it is
you guys enjoy it and that's fine, the album definitely gets better as it goes on i'll give it that but that first 20 minutes is rough as hell......bright colored artwork doesn't help either (for Opeth standards) even though it has no bearing on the music.....they improved on this formula over the next 3 records
worst Opeth and not even close honestly

Album Rating: 2.5
this is also the 2nd lowest rated album on our beloved website so there's that too - counter arguments are null and void
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
I love the artwork and always have, and really can't have that be part of the argument on the album's quality, don't make me paraphrase an extremely worn-out proverb
In any case, you just made me bump this just to spite your shit take. Oh and because it's awesome

to me, where this album really suffers is in the songwriting department. i love the production, performances and lots of the individual sections. but most of the songs feel like really disparate ideas that mikael kind of just stitched together into "songs". the changes between sections are really jarring, the best sections usually dont last long enough, and the boring sections overstay their welcome. even haxprocess, which is easily my favorite song, suffers from some really weird songwriting decisions

okay tough guy, forgive me if I don't subscribe to your blanket "site says it's bad so it's a fact it's bad" default, what a way to live huh
|
| |
Album Rating: 2.5
storm dude im sorry you don't like the fact that i don't like this and that i express itt and now you think i'm being a tough guy because i called you a sensitive snowflake? and then you insult my way of 'living'?
for those that know me, they know I comment in good fun, even to stir it up at times.....relax my friend.....it's only a shitty album bruh

if you analyse that data, this album has over 1000 ratings more than any of the records opeth have released since, and (at a glance) over half of those were placed before Pale Communion was out
easy to chalk this up as a King of Limbs deal, where the initial, negative-leaning reception of a divisive stylistic departure record was immortalised in the average because there were simply far more users active on the site at the time. plenty to read into there - certainly far more people prepared to take it on its own terms than there were back in that release period (i certainly shrugged this off at the time)
and are we really going to take the band that made Morningrise (great record) to court over janky songwriting decisions lol. by the time Opeth had hit Ghost Reveries, their songwriting was almost tediously dialled in. this isn't a perfect album by any means, but it went above and beyond the good work started on Watershed when it came to unpicking their sound and breathing fresh life into it
and yeah, we're all posting in good faith here - don't think anyone wants to blow this debate into a beef
