Yes, subgenre originality discussions can be circular and annoying but I was not at all arguing about that.

i always got the impression that lana never got that big either, idk i'm not from the us but

she's bigger on online circles but lorde reached way more into the mainstream and i think was more influential sound-wise tbh idk

Lana is huge in the US, there's a whole subgenre of American woman dedicated to being Lana-lite lmao

like she's famous but she doesn't have a hit as big as lorde's royals i think, and whatever little anglo pop i've heard seems way closer to pure heroine than born to die, maybe it's just the stuff i've heard though

now i'm thinking it might just be my perception since i avoid cursive singing stuff as much as possible lmao, i think that stuff might be closer to lana, i find it so dull

lana has 55mil spotify listeners to lorde's 18mil

granted lorde hasn't dropped anything in three years and when that release is fucking solar power it may as well be seven... while lana has been on a pretty prolonged peak since nfr.

alex: woah didn't expect such a gap, i guess lorde isn't as influential in pop, maybe pop was heading in that direction regardless

budgie: lmao why would u do that ?!

i didn't think it'd be that large either but ig it makes sense. lorde is/was still certainly influential she's just done absolutely nothing to maintain her relevance over the past 5+ years. if not for ribs blowing up on tiktok last year it might've been even bigger.

if lorde dropped a new album and it was actually good i think she'd prob jump up to like 40 prob. she's still def a name but so much time has passed since "the masses" last paid attention to her.

i def think lana is a lot more popular than lorde these days in the US but i could def buy the gap being a lot closer everywhere else. lana also has some serious stans while with lorde everyone just kinda agrees she's really good and that's that.

The lack of output is definitely a factor when it comes to Lorde. Lana has never really given the public a chance to forget about her, whereas Lorde only comes back once in a blue moon to drop a new album. And I think that's why the middling reception to Solar Power was so devastating: when you release so little music, each record needs to feel like a real event. And when said event flops... well, that's another 3-4 years down the drain

On the plus side, the limited output ensures that Lorde doesn't put out nearly as much pointless filler as many of her contemporaries. So that's a silver lining

also think nfr really revived lana's career in a commercial sense and brought a whole new-ish generation/demographic of fans on board. not that she was ever exactly floundering but the two albums before were kinda duds and i saw her live around 2018 and it felt like she was dining hard on born to die still

now her shows are like almost all post-nfr material. she feels very fresh and current still in a way that lorde absolutely doesn't for better or worse.

that's because lana is a great songwriter and has a consistently great discography and lorde sucks

Alex, if Charli and Lorde collab, the only thing you can expect is a variant re-issue of Tortured Poets featuring 3 mins of Taylor farting to block the collab from #1
