“Unfathomably bad” is a pretty big word for how relatively spicy my take was. I think SATH is a really interesting direction for their music being so stripped back comparatively

My bad if that was a bit snappy; can agree that SATH has an edge over tbh anything else in their discog (though idk if I'd call it stripped back - has a much lusher tone to the two before it, even if it's less polished in many respects)
but I'd maintain that this band has been getting more meat and potatoes with every release for several years now. I feel a pretty sharp creative cutoff point after Vertikal and have rarely felt the same excitement from anything since that their earlier records carried in spades - band still know their way around min/max dynamics, but they're cruising on proficiency

yeah it was just a bit snappy is all, thanks man, we good. and would tend to agree with you, the way this band has grown on me is strange, i can never seem to grab on to more than a couple albums at a time during a period of my life, rather than developing a super deep appreciation for their work as a whole. i loved vertikal and salvation a year or two ago and now don't really have the inclination, but absolutely adore adtf and sath. makes me wonder 'is their music so big and epic that my brain/heart can only handle some of it at a time, or are these guys just the Beach House of post-metal' lol. some new inspiration could do a lot for these fellas i think. gonna jam this one again tonight and see if it sticks beyond the seemingly perma 3.8

Definitely feel like their music has gotten (slightly) less engaging the more bells and whistles they add to it. SATH was an album of stark simplicity with some big emotional heft to the lyrics and atmosphere. The keyboards/electronics being present but subdued felt like a perfect match for these guys, whereas the keyboards in particular get a little overbearing at times on their last few releases. They're going for different/bigger sounds with mclargehuge climaxes now and that's fine, and I will fully admit I'm heavily biased towards the more raw SATH sound having heard/fallen in love with it first

idk men if ADTF was released in place of SATH we'd revere it similarly, of that I have absolutely no doubt.

I feel like a nice direction this band could go is similar to how they did with eternal kingdom with a handful of 6-8 minute tunes to really change it up. I love this band to death but I don't know if I will be as receptive to another album with five 10 minute songs with big endings on them. IDK... I'm sure id still fanboy over it but you get what I mean.

Hmmmmm, I feel like I agree with Johnny with respect to how intricate and ambitiously drawn out and grandiose the arrangements are, but I feel like there has been an added sense of riffage in some of the newer stuff that is a little absent in the older stuff. I am def team SATH, but have enjoyed the last two LPs quite a bit.

‘My bad if that was a bit snappy; can agree that SATH has an edge over tbh anything else in their discog (though idk if I'd call it stripped back‘
It was snappy but mostly correct, new CoL can’t really compete - although I’d say Salvation is their best and most erm… understated (wouldn’t use ‘stripped back’, I did consider it).
I did love Dawn and think it has more uniqueness, personally & depth within their discog than you will give it credit for, but since then they’ve started to delve towards producing ‘inessential’ material (not ‘bad’ per se or even average, let’s make that distinction). Artists can’t reinvent themselves in satisfying ways forever, so that’s just how it is I guess
They sound comfortable in themselves and can probably churn out a few more decent albums along the same lines, I just don’t expect to be amazed by reinvention anymore. Wanting a better example (first thing I thought of) if this is their ‘Crack The Skye’, I just hope they never release a ‘The Hunter’ lol.
Hope I’m wrong, of course

"Inessential material" is a great way to describe it. They gave us tons of incomparable material over the years, they probably won't continue to reinvent themselves forever (still it would be great tho).

'Agree titan but personally think SATH is the only old record of theirs that can compete with the newer stuff. Took me forever to really get into it but that one along with ADTF kinda wipe the floor over everything else'
octagon dude we'll have to get back to back to fend all of these muthafuckers off

I'm sure it partly depends when you first listened to the band. If you've been listening to them since the early days, the probability goes up that the newer records feel mostly like more of the same, with diminishing impact. But as someone who started with ADTF, some of the older stuff sounds similar to me, yes, but with more basic textures. So I prefer the new stuff.

I have to agree though the bands in a weird place atm I want a shake up with whatever they put out next. Its not that their material is declining in quality its just a bit samey and comfortable i thinks the best way to put it. This records also a weird one to place for me as i didnt fall in love with it as much as other CoL records. ADTF and SATH are both insane high bars the band has set themselves. I really like Mariner as well but I feel without Julies presence that record would fall flat on its face
