I like the whispers on Shellstar, its a neat addition as opposed to something more obvious like bringing in harsh vocals for the climax

Fair question, I might not be the best to answer it given that as much as I enjoy those bands I wouldn't say their vocals are great. Still, I find these worse for the reasons I stated, plus the album itself doesn't come close to touching Slowdive or MBV's best which doesn't help.

both those bands have plenty of solid vocal melodies + female vocals for variety and added harmonies, you can prefer one to the other

Yeah, I'm sorta get Deafheaven does Nothing vibes, particularly with all the punchy choruses

I think the Nothing comparison is more accurate yeh

Yet, you're saying the vocals here are awful. Come on, MBV and Slowdive were never known for their vocals.

I don't even think this album needs female vocals.

it doesn't need them, no, I don't think much stands out about the vocals either way- they're competent

From George to go from screaming 95% of the time on Ordinary to vice versa on here, he's really developed as a vocalist. Sounds like a natural progression for him too, his cleans don't strike me as forced and he seems to have found his comfort zone with singing.
A lot of people find him to be the weak link of the band, but I disagree.

Everyone is a weak link compared to Dan.

[2] Dan is an absolute force to be reckoned with. He might honestly be my favorite drummer.

vocals would be fine if everything else wasnt totally boring

Yeah and they have the good sense not to lean on them and/or apply them more tastefully than here

Dan the fucking man

"his cleans don't strike me as forced and he seems to have found his comfort zone with singing."
I'm having the opposite reaction to his singing, it sounds... idk, like an affectation to me. There's something about it that feels dishonest.
It's not that a big a deal tho, I could probably look past it if the songs were better.
" Alcest- Shelter comes to mind as well"
I hate this comparison

Speaking of leaning, this is the first Deafheaven album that features a bassist it seems according to my ears.

I hate the comparison with Shelter too because Alcest has always had this really strong emotional core where their music sounds like the clouds parting after a storm which is the opposite of the clinical imitation that Deafheaven is known for.
Also the vocals on this one come across worse and worse with multiple listens. The singer sounds so corny, so goofy. It's unbearable. This is the worst shoegaze record of the decade.

The comparisons with Nothing don't ring true for me. Nothing's music is fun and catchy.
