Seriously though, this album has only gotten better and better for me with repeat listens. I'm now convinced this is absolutely Rody's most compelling vocal performance.
The part toward the end of The Duelling Cavalier that just keeps unexpectedly shifting chords "follow my lead, fall into me, fall into decay" gives me chills every goddamn time.
I'm also a huge sucker for the ending of Gift Horse too. That triumphant explosion of the last 30 seconds is perfection

Honestly found this underwhelming, like all of their newest releases. Literally play something from this then something from Kezia/Fortress, the quality gap is ridiculous. I find this very uninspired, but not bad, so just meh.

This album is so good I might never listen to Kezia or Fortress again...

I obviously disagree with the first part of your statement, but yeah, Kezia and Fortress are much better than the rest of the material this band has ever put out.

anyway Gift Horse is my new fav track

I never loved fortress like everyone else. My favorites are this, volition and kezia.

Fortress was groundbreaking when it came out imho. I did not listen to anything else for weeks, it was sikth levels of absolute bonkerly being head of their peers
|
| |
Looking back at Fortress, it's child's play compared to Sikth. Still a classic album though.

I don't know is it? I feel like the sweeps on Fortress are on average more complex, Sikth maybe has better drum lines but I wouldn't say Fortress is an easy disc to olay either

I'd take DOADD over any PTH album, but I wouldn't say it's vastly superior.
|
| |
Fortress is definitely technical and fast and requires a lot of effort to learn, but when you sit down and study the guitar tabs you'll notice a lot of it the riffs center around the pentatonic scale and most of the leads are derived from shapes used all over in metal lead playing

I don't think PtH's selling point is raw technicality, it's just that they're good songwriters with enough technical flair to keep things interesting, and they have more self-restraint than a lot of 'prog' bands
|
| |
They really showed restraint on this album. I like that move a lot

"tbh this feels like a different band from Kezia/Fortress"
Yeah that's probably why I like this so much more than those.

For sure, Kezia's probably always going to have the nostalgia goggles for me, but the songwriting on this one is a step up from anything else they've done did

This felt much more scaled back, at least relative to their previous albums. Undecided on a rating yet, but this might be my favorite of theirs

I can't express how much I like "All Hands". It's fantastic.

Gardenias makes me worry for Rody's throat
like dude didn't you have to relearn how to sing or something, those YES A BLONDEs can't be good for you
