Idk, I’m into it. Maybe I was just feeling the magic seeing him live but I do like this new single in particular a bit more.

Boots Mine Gold and Hard To Make a Living are decent, I just don’t understand why he’s trying so hard to throw away everything that made him unique

I guess the lack of spotlight for that one is a factor in why he’s pivoted to such a traditional sound

i guess a better answer is he's doing whatever he wants creatively and can't blame him for that
Think he did say in his interview with gonzo that the next album would sound quite different

Folks are being too alarmist, based on the show I saw last month it will be a very solid country album at worst. Likely won't match the magic of this one but it's still a great sound even if less ~cosmic~ than it was here. Vox still sound like buttah based on the singles and the live show (during which he even said his vox were only at 60% after being sick).

They were never going to be able to surpass Starmaker. Absolute once in a lifetime album. I'm hoping for something extremely listenable and catchy from the new release.

I like his new singles
He's doing well with traditional country as well. And his SOFT quality is still there. he can innovate again with the next album. I wouldn't mind a good sounding country record coming.

First listen to the new one down and yeah, I told you all you were freaking out too much. I think there’s plenty to love. It’s not a repeat of this album - and it shouldn’t be! It’s a little more straightforward but maintains a lot of the classic country sound of this one, with a bit more of a rootin tootin country rock thing going (it’s more of a “band” album than this was), but there are several lovely slower tracks too. “The World Moves” really touched me, maybe my favorite. The opener is gorgeous as well, and the stretch from “Lake Song” to “Heaven Knows I Won’t Be There” are stunners too (the closer following that is mostly functional but a fun way to end it). Also Colton is underrating “Ain’t No Cowboys in Georgia”, that’s one of my favorites too, the guitar sound in that one really gets to me. Overall I’d say the album is likely to land as a solid 4 for me.

New album is a solid 4 to be fair, might actually build the legs to have a longer career - I can imagine him delivering a classic in this more varied but also more trad style...but this isn't it.
This new one is just a different sort of vibe album

I didn't know he had a new album out. I'll give it a whirl and a twirl.

Yeah I'm curious about the trajectory his career will take from here, clearly he built some momentum with Starmaker but I think the proximity to covid left it kind of underexposed as he couldn't tour it, whereas this one he's touring with a pretty popular country artist so must be gaining more exposure via that. The new one is a more "live"/road album and definitely seems to set him up a bit better as a career act. Question is whether people will come back to Starmaker and it it'll build up more notoriety as an underground classic.
