They have the Deftones formula down and have their own style, but none of the balance. There's something about the ultra chug-y metalcore riffs that feels distanced from the shoegaze-y bits

Really I could do without all of the shoegazy tracks, just makes me want to listen to bands that do it better.

Ended up my album of the year this.

I actually like it more than the top Deftones album that came same year which is really saying something as they’re so heavily influenced by them.

Yeah dude, Deftones made my top 10 easily but this really did it for me this year. It has my favourite dreamy songs of the year with Was It Really You?, Sad Cartoon and Two Way Mirror and some of the best heavy core of the year too with Gored etc.

It was no way as cohesive as Ohms because that album flowed so well and this is disjointed AF but the highlights here were huge to me

This is effective and much more direct listen. I feel Deftones more mature, chalenging and layered. You grow with the songs and them with you imo.

When this record, Deftones, Hum, Scarypoolparty, and the new Black Wing all stand to be in my top ten albums this year, I’m realizing that I’m a tad biased toward the alt. metal-gaze sound.

That said ... y’all got any more of them alt metalgaze records? *tyronebiggums.jpg*

First three you mentioned are all in my top 10 so I’m off to check the other two now!

I assume you checked The Great Dismal by Nothing this year? Similar vibes to the Hum album, less metal than this or Deftones but good dreamy passages

About your ‘songs growing’ comment man, I think the gazey passages on this are massively layered. On ‘Is It Really You?’ and ‘Sad Cartoon’ I picked out new bits in the mix five or six times, once after about three months of having it on rotation because I switched to headphones rather than my car or office speakers. There’s a lot of cool stuff going on here.

All tracks are so good and addictive, I really like this, don't get me wrong. It has also its own depth.

Alright, here's a rec: Watertank - Silent Running

It's not heavy like this album, but more like Teenage Wrist, Deftones guitars, Look What I Did vocals, and that gazey metal riffing that Loathe has.
