Yeah, it is much-much weaker. Initially, I almost hated Skeleton Tree, but it grew on me over the years. However, Ghosteen is nothing compared to it. The live versions on the Sydney Opera live album help a bit, but still very weak.

Maybe this is Skeleton Tree on a harder difficulty setting

For sure. I promised myself several times not to diss this album, because I love the man, but here I am. I can't even imagine what he's been going through in those years, so I really should just put this away, and go back to From Her..., Your Funeral... and alike.

hope to god for our sake he doesn't lose any more family members. i don't think i could handle an album worse than this. i don't even know how if that's humanly possible

I feel guilty but the dark humour loving part of me roused an automatic, yet very awkward chuckle

The best Cave and one of the few albums where I can clearly recall my first listen (stumbled upon the YouTube stream while in a cheap hotel near Sarajevo Airport). This is music that changed the way I look at the world.

Good for you, I know it is special for many people, and I’m kinda happy for that. Nick can always deliver, touch the souls of selected ones. I also can clearly recall how and when I first heard “The Mercy Seat”, it was revelatory. But Ghosteen to me it is just the worst case scenario already forecasted by “Into My Arms”.

Into My Arms is absolutely incredible, I completely agree about the rest though

At least we can agree about The Mercy Seat. Monumental song. Love the 84-94 Cave era.

fucking love Wild God

It's a pop song basically, but not bad for a start, has more instrumentation than Ghosteen altogether. Still, youtube shuffled the live version of "O Children" with a kids choir immediately after "Wild God", and well, I really-really miss that period of his.
You all know this one, right?

Wild Gone is surprisingly light. Could this album actually be... happy?

Wild God is immediately better than the entirety of this album. I’m actually maybe lowkey excited now. Nick Cave seems to have found music again!

Ooh nice, good excuse to give a few of my lesser explored Cave cuts another once over in prep (not that I wasn't already doing this!)

New song was excellent. I love 2010s Cave, the Carnage album, and the Blonde score, but returning to a more No More Shall We Part and Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus full band kind of sound again would be fantastic at this point.
