Next year I'm completely avoiding new releases until late in the year (unless one of my absolute favourite artists releases a new album). Dedicating 2019 to older stuff that I want to catch up on.

I always start the first 3-4 months of the year checking/reviewing new stuff like a mad man. Then I get burnt out, depressed, etc., leave the site for a long time, then randomly pop back up again in the fall to restart the cycle.

I mostly checked records on a very shallow level but now at work I finally have the time to re-listen records that left me wanting more so that's cool. Diving into a lot of different stuff

Sometimes that's what matters most. Although the number of bands is technically finite, I consider the huge amount present to be infinite to a given listener--you really just can't hear everything you want to. There will always be a classic you miss, a hidden gem passed up, and so on. Just enjoy what you're able to get. Good music is everywhere.

lucky me

my job isn't too demanding so I'm always carefully listening to new things as well. I get all the "burnt out" issue, but I'm new to the site and always thinking (tks to sput) that now is the time where I'm listening to the best music I ever listened to (new things = old&new stuff)

I need to catch up on 2017's shit, that was probably my worst year yet for looking for new music - yeah, I checked some of the more obvious drops, but there's a ton I missed, which is why something like BackWordz managed to sneak its way into my top 20 of 2017.

When in doubt, keep an eye on what's trending, what people's opinions on it are, then decide to give it a go. Helps decrease the playing field a bit. Sometimes I'll only listen to stuff that's running with a 4.0+ avg. to check on the hype and see if it's warranted. Might not be the best strategy but it's good in a pinch if you want to quickly get in touch with the potential best stuff of the year

Yet I also believe that some of the best music ever made has been made in that last 10 years, and the best music that will ever be made has yet to come.

There's this constantly rumbling conundrum for me when it comes to new vs old, let me try & explain for a second...

New - it hasn't stood the test of time yet, we don't know whether anyone will care in a few years, maybe not even next year. This doesn't mean it's inferior necessarily, just that there's very little 'evidence' to go on before taking that initial dive into the unknown. However, there are advantages as well... the excitement of said music being 'current' & others talking about it, the potential for live shows where active artists are playing material from these releases & this idea that discovering music which could shape the future in some way. Of course FOMO is at play & is much stronger here.

Old - it has stood the test of time, if people are still discussing it (even in relatively small numbers) then it hasn't been forgotten. 'Cult classics' are still relevant to their respective communities & that's despite tons of likely similar releases occurring since, there must be something making it unique, or perhaps it's just of such high quality that people keep returning? Of course you don't get the advantages in the 'new' section. Maybe one advantage could be if you're interested in music history, especially within specific genres (if you want to dig deeper).

In short, with the necessary research & knowing your own taste etc. I'd probably have a higher rate of success with 'old' but 'new' is just so damn exciting. Tough call. P.S. When I say 'old' this doesn't include 'classics'/widely appreciated mainstream stuff because you won't likely forget about it & will always be 'visible' in some way.

Nicely put Demon. I tend to lean towards new personally, but that's based upon my (limited) experience.

I will drag Amia Venera Landscape's corpse all the way to my damn grave. I don't care if it's just me, they'll stand the test of time so long as I'm alive.

Gives me a good reason to live lol

@Tundral yeah I know Mechina, listened to their last effort. It was good, but not special for me. I'll take a good listen to Vektor for sure, a lot of people recommending it.

as for the discussion on old vs new stuff I wholeheartedly agree with DotF. the more new stuff I listen to the more critical I tend to get though haha. when the initial excitement of finding out and listening to new stuff wears a bit I tend to only value the original and off-kilter material that pushes boundaries of musical expression within whatever genre it is labeled as (sometimes by best effort). I generally tend to bump up the scores of the old material I keep coming back to, because that is a good sign that it is something I truly enjoy over time. I suppose time is the best test for most things in general.
