@BigPleb I've looked at the DEG subreddit to see what other fans are thinking, and the general impression of TIW seems to be "meh". Reaction to the new Sukekiyo was pretty mixed too. They're not as critical as we are but few think it's amazing. I don't get the impression that this site's opinions are that different, other than that Uroboros is the highest rated here and DSS is the most popular there.

DEG Reddit is cancerous.
Outside of Sput the album was definitely received more positively for the most part but still had critics (Monochrome Heaven, Facebook DEG groups, Japanese fandom). Sukekiyo dropped a bunch of B-side messes with a few good songs after Adoratio...deserves all the poor reception.

@Calc I know the subreddit (like Reddit in general) is cancerous, but I've seen @Acme and I think @EvoHavok post there before so I know not everyone there is retarded. I also know someone else relatively normal from there whom I kept telling to listen to Mike Patton; I don't know if she ever has or not.
The funniest story I have from the subreddit is arguing with the weird German dude who runs the DEG wiki. He was complaining that there were hardly any DEG fans anymore, and I said that there was a fair bit of DEG fandom on Sputnik. He responded by saying that we weren't REAL fans because we didn't like them back when they were popular in the west (as in...never? Pretty sure they got stuff thrown at them when they opened for Deftones back in the day; it's not like they were ever Iron Maiden or something).
Agreed that the new Sukekiyo is a mess. There was nu-metal shite on that record as well from what I remember, and generally bad songwriting to boot.

I liked the new Sukekiyo for the most part. Ive heard some criticism of the production but I thought it was pretty solid (perhaps the drums could have used more of an impact) despite Tue Madsen not being involved. There were a few questionable tracks, but overall it was a fun time. 3'd it.
Also pre-ordered the new single just so I could watch the bluray that comes with the deluxe. If the new single is along the lines of Zetsuentai then i'll be happy.

@Irony: I know that dude (Seelentau), he's a wet blanket and does nothing but DEG so unless you want rare stuff/want history on them, he's not worth your time. And I think they're referring to 2009-2013, they had a full UK tour with Bring Me the Horizon and massive EU/NA tour that went well.
@sam: Tbh new Sukekiyo being meh in studio isn't a big loss as long as they give a proper live to it. Passio is the true worst, such a downgrade from Mutans/Persuasio.

The DSS tour was their peak in many ways (though the Arche tour was good too), but any decrease in popularity since then is clearly due to TIW being underwhelming and poor live shows like the one you went to, along with issues with distribution etc, not fans just "growing up", as he put it; he was apparently under the impression that bands which have been around for decades are mostly followed by teenagers.

In terms of overseas tours, their 2009 and 2013 tours were on fleek; 2011 was inconsistent. Their shows are still as attended as ever, but their management giving up on NA in 2015 and doing the Mode tours has hampered their growth.

They're doing a NA tour this year, though. I'm under the impression that they're doing 1 NA tour per album cycle, hence 1 in 2015 and 1 in 2019.

Hope next time they come to Canada, would have gone to this one if they came a bit closer to where I live

Surprised there aren't any shows in Canada. They at least did Toronto last time.
They hate touring overseas apparently, so the small number of shows is expected.

Value is the weirdest on here and everyone hates it, so not necessarily ... they mostly have to stop throwing in every stupid nu metal riff they come across while jamming casually, because that's what a lot of this sounds like.

@DrGonzo This isn't really generic metal though. Metal has riffs (varying in quality), while this is pretty much all chugs (or nu-metal riffs as you describe them). Granted I'm not sure how much people subscribe to my belief that most nu-metal isn't metal here (Korn called themselves a funk band from what I remember).
Forgettable metal to me is something like the last couple of Metallica albums. The heavy songs on this are largely a dismal chugfest, much more on the -core side than metal. The appeal of chugs is obvious; they're an awful lot easier to write than riffs, even mediocre ones.
Regarding weirdness, it can work or not. Values of Madness is weird in that it's a crappy nu-metal song 20 years after that genre was popular, which definitely makes it stand out temporally if nothing else. By contrast Phenomenon is a pretty weird song but it's one of the highlights of Arche. The new epic song could be weird in a good Vinushka/Diabolos/2013 Macabre way or it could be a 10 minute nu-metal song, which would certainly be weird given how simplistic that genre was. 10 minutes of two-note chugs would be incredibly boring, but definitely weird.
